So this is the deal. I currently drive a perfectly functional 2010 SEAT Ibiza Sport, I have been driving it for 5 years now, and I am very happy with it... But I keep thinking that I should upgrade to something newer/better equipped, like an Audi A1. If I do that I’ll have to spend some money on the trade, but my fear is that in a year or so I would feel the need to trade again for something new. How do you know it’s time to get something new? How long do you keep your car?

Until it is paid off and I could careless how much I get for it. It will probably end up at the auction in 3 years.

I keep my car until I get bored of it. So yeah, I can only give you terrible advice.

If I had the money to do so, I would get a new (to me at least) car when ever I got tired of the last one, if the car is not giving you the widest grin possible when ever you get in it, if you don’t look back at it when the drive is over, if you are not being as meticulous with its care as you usually are, if you ever dread the thought of having to drive it, then time for something else.

For me personally, the longest I’ve kept a car has been a year and a half.

When you find yourself describing your car as “perfectly functional”, that’s when.

Yup. I get the new car itch about every 10-12 months. having a car that is a project, and a bit more modifiable has subsidize that urge though.

Considering that there will be a lot of similarities between the Ibiza and the A1, I’d recommend something different. Maybe go up to a Golf/Leon/A3 or Down to a Up!/Mii/Citigo, or do what I did When I got rid of my Polo, buy an MX-5.

I replaced my last one because it broke down, probably keeping this one a long while yet.

I keep a vehicle until it no longer meets my needs or is no longer economical to run and maintain.

But if you have the money to change because you’re no longer enjoying your car, there’s nothing wrong with that.

I kept my first car for a year, my second for two years, my third for six-and-a-half years, and I'll probably keep my fourth (current) for longer than that. I keep them until they get old enough to need regular repairs and then I'm over it.

Change your car when you have the desire and means to do so.

If you still like it, then save your money. Keep saving that money until you no longer like it, then you can get yourself a much nicer vehicle to trade up to.

Whenever you get bored of it or it becomes a black hole to maintain. I’ve had seven vehicles in the last five years...
