Personally I’d like to nominate:
From the normal side of the Atlantic - ‘Allo ‘Allo!
From the fat side of the Atlantic - Married... with Children (especially the first 5 seasons or so, after that it gets almost unbearably stupid)
What are your opinions?
Also, last time I called the Americas ‘the fat side of the Atlantic’ some people got upset. Please know that to me it is a term of endearment ;)

Corner Gas and Trailer Park Boys (If you could even call Trailer Park Boys a sitcom.)
Both VERY Canadian, which is extremely fitting, as I’m me.

Grounded For Life is the only sitcom I like enough to own so I suppose it’s my favorite. Still chuckle about it and make references that no one at work gets to this day years and years after it was canceled.
Should have been more successful...I blame all y'all.

Most definitely Married.. with Children

Fucking Trailer Park Boys. It’s so stupid but I can’t stop watching it.

It is a true masterpiece.

Don’t say we were supposed to know you were Canadian, because we’re all shocked by that revelation. Shocked!

of all time? The Office (US) :]

Seinfeld. As I’ve grown older and spent more time in NYC, its become even more funny to me. I’m sure I’ve seen every episode by now.
And shout out to the normal side of the Atlantic; y’all talk funny, but we still love you.

I tried watching the first 2 episodes, but found them extremely hard to stomach. Does it get any better?
![]() 03/25/2016 at 16:37 |

I never “got” Seinfeld.
![]() 03/25/2016 at 16:38 |

Home Improvement, Friends, How I Met Your Mother, Simpsons (does that count?)...I know, I’m boring.
![]() 03/25/2016 at 16:40 |

Seinfeld
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
The Office
Parks and Recreation
Curb Your Enthusiasm

Never seen Home Improvement, I found Friends passable, but kinda meh, HIMYM was pretty great until the last 3 or so seasons though. Simpsons are pretty good, but I prefer Futurama. :D

I found Archer extremely agonising to watch, unfortunately. :(

Also, we love you guys too. With your stupidly big engines and your guns. We may not always show it but you’re our favourites <3.

Argh yes. “the fallen Madonna with the big boobies” and “listen very carefully, I shall say this only once”. Lol.
The one I remember from a kid was ‘Out Of This World’, from across the pond.
From my side. ‘As Time Goes By’.

Of all time, I love Northern Exposure. I loved seeing that and Seinfeld on in the same era. I also liked Star Trek TNG, DS9, Farscape, BSG reboot, Doctor Who, X Files, too many to list.. I recently found a little UK series called the Detectorists, it’s great but low volume like many UK series.

Sure. Like most shows, the writing and situations get better as it matured, so you might want to jump in around season 2 or 3. Although the “show about nothing” premise isn’t for everyone, and it plays on the neurotic NYC Jew trope pretty hard, I still think it is arguably the greatest American sitcom of the 90s.
My only gripe is the annoying laugh track....I hope the guy who made that decision rots in hell.
![]() 03/25/2016 at 16:48 |

I found the first few tough to get through but I've since fallen in love with that show
![]() 03/25/2016 at 16:49 |

To be fair, I think the laugh track makes quite a few sitcoms a lot less awkward that they’d be otherwise, and I really hate awkward humour. It’s one of the reasons I wasn’t able to stomach Modern Family.

Yes, the first season is a bit rough. Seinfeld would have been cancelled if it came on today. Thank goodness networks had more patience then.

I think the thing that made Seinfeld funny was that all the characters were in some way shitty people so you were either laughing at the terrible things they did or the terrible things that happened to them.

It is truly one of the all time greats. It made me appreciate the long lasting French tradition of fooling around with anything that moves as well.

I’ll give it another go, especially since I love Bob’s Burgers.
![]() 03/25/2016 at 16:56 |

If you watch from the beginning, the first few episodes are shaky and slowish, but they’re good background. If you’re not laughing by “Skytanic,” you might never like it. But seasons 2-4 are probably my favorite episodes of television, period.

I struggled getting into bobs burgers even more than Archer, but everyone said how good it was and now I see that. I also really enjoy the sound of H Jon Benjamin's voice.
![]() 03/25/2016 at 16:57 |

Bob’s Burgers is a really different pace, but I love that one, too. I want Jon Benjamin to like narrate my life.

It’s also us British laughing at ourselves, laughing at the French and generally taking the total pi55 out of the Germans. The cousins across the pond had their own equivalent with ‘Hogan’s Heroes’ from 1965.

I hated Bob’s Burgers until season 2, then I went back to season 1 and actually managed to appreciate it.

The original UK version of Coupling
Frasier
Seinfeld
From Finnish ones probably these:

Doc Martin, Fawlty Towers, Taxi, WKRP in Cincinnati, Modern Family, Arrested Development, Archer. All very well written, something important to me.

SEINFELD

If we’re sticking to live action. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Arrested Development, Spaced, Everybody Loves Raymond, Scrubs, Workaholics. That’s pretty much all I can think of off the top of my head.
Oh, Also the Office. At least the early seasons of the show. Yes, the U.S Version.
![]() 03/25/2016 at 17:20 |
|
I’m trying that now with archer. Though I actually think the first episode kind of sucked still.
![]() 03/25/2016 at 17:24 |

Scubs is great, I watched a lot of that actually. Haven’t seen any of the others, but one of my ex-girlfriends was really into Sunny in Philly and claimed it was almost straight up porn. Any truth to that?

British Office is terrible unless you’re British. As is the way with most British comedy.

Wait - Allo Allo instead of Only Fools and Horses? I thought that was illegal on the island :)
![]() 03/25/2016 at 17:36 |

Yeah, Futurama too. Kind of embarrassed I forgot that. Everybody Loves Raymond and Frasier are two more of my 90s favorites.

Arrested Development is a gem.

Ah, ‘Allo ‘Allo; now that takes me back the early ‘90s, watching Britcoms and sci-fi like Blake’s 7 and HHGTTG on one of the local PBS stations here in Pittsburgh (the former WQEX , home of the best sign-offs ever!).

Scrubs (USA)
Drop the Dead Donkey (UK)
Frontline (Aust)

Not even close. Sure, there’s a lot of sexual humor in it, to claim its straight up porn is nowhere near the truth. The only thing in the show that comes close is in the Christmas special, where Danny DeVito’s character Frank births out of a couch at a party in only his socks. Sure, it leaves the scarring image of Danny DeVito’s bare ass on you, but that’s the only part of the show I can think of that would give credence to your ex girlfriends statement.
Unless of course I’m misunderstanding the statement altogether, in which case I'll answer the follow up questions you have.

I can’t believe no one has nominated 30 Rock. I got into it really late in its run but burned through all of them on Netflix and got caught up. It’s crammed full of so many great one liners and absurdity.
As far as English shows go, probably Father Ted.
