later this year will mark the 20th anniversary of my owning a cell phone...
I used to work at a Bell-Nynex (later Verizon) mobile dealer and we got commission on a phone/plan sold to ourselves... it’s the only way I could afford it as a college freshman.

StarTAC
That really is a good looking design for a phone.

almost unbelievably small at the time.
Also: DIGITAL SIGNAL!@!!?? WAAAA!~!!!! Text messages? Like a text pager? NO, BETTER!!!!! OMG! I remember asking people “do you have a digital phone? Can I text you? (where “can” was the traditional, not incorrect usage, not “may” I text you, but “is it possible” to text you? ;)

Remember when texting was totally free and nobody used it?

I remember going from a MicroTac to a StarTac. The smugness levels could not be contained.

That’s cool! This year is the 10th anniversary for me. I wasn’t allowed to get a cell phone until I got my driver’s license. Picked up this little Nokia and got myself a Cingular (now AT&T) prepaid plan in May 2006.
It had a trial version of Tetris. And, it supported REAL ringtones - not just polyphonic ones. High tech.

My dad was the first person to have a cell phone in my family, and he had a sstar tac just like that one. I remember taking it with me when I would go ride dirt bike (trails and gravel roads), my buddy broke his arm and I called his parents using my dads StarTac!

I hate and despise phones. I was the last last person in my circles to get a cell phone in 2004. My girlfriend (now wife) basically forced me to get one. From 2001-2004 I had no phone service at all. I live communicated via Instant Messaging, pay phones, work phones, and early early VOIP...had a deal with the local dominos where I could email the night manager my order on his personal email before 3pm and he'd put it in for a 730 pm delivery heh.

I had a Star Tac for a while, such a great phone. Before that I had some version of the Nokia brick (maybe a 2110 or similar?), and before that is was either a Motorola bag-phone or it was built into your car.

My first phone was a Kyocera KX414 Phantom, in 2003. I still have it somewhere.

I miss my Start a. My old boss had a Microtac It was tiny! He was a huge dude too. Made me laugh when he would check his pockets for it.
