Fake chrome plastic trim really bothers me. Tons of modern pickups, for example, still insist on stupid amounts of chrome trim. Nothing is made of metal anymore and “bling” went out of style a decade ago.

I know Saab was doing it with their corporate grilles before corporate grilles were a thing, but I just wasn’t having it anymore. Maybe if it provided contrast against a navy, black, or red body, but it’s just glaring against silver. I acted accordingly, dipping the outer grille matte black and sanding down the Saab “airplane wings” in the middle to a brushed aluminum look.

Admittedly the “before” is a better picture, but still. Next up is restoring the cloudy headlights.

I love it! Death to chrome!

Well done. This is one of the first things I’d like to do to my Buick, asthetically. Far too much chrome for a 90s bubble-styled luxury cruiser.

My sentiment on chrome is largely this: small accents are only worth having to accent larger pieces, pieces of real chromed metal. Pieces of real chromed metal look best when they have some edges or detail to them, but pedestrian safety and lack of imagination mean that most of the time you end up with fake chrome that is part of the simple larger shape of the car rather than standing out. Thus claiming the double crown of doing nothing and looking awful while doing so.

(not the worst offender, but no. Just no.)

Small chrome accents can be like taking a first class plane ticket from New Haven to JFK - a lot of ceremony in something that is tiny and just dumb in the first place.

Lol, the S3 badges and the rings are it! mines got the “black optics” pkg (color matching mirrors, black window trim, black grille/splitters) where Audi normally sprays tacky chrome/brushed silver everywhere.

I thought about getting black badges/rings, but I saw a one with those and it looks like the beginnings of someone that plans to ruin their car with cheap parts/stance.

Let me rephrase; Death to all chrome, cept for manufacturer and model designation badges.

You will come to regret plasti dip once you need to remove it.

Looks great. I did the same thing to my mk5 jetta back in the day because it’s just so gawdy and prone to rock chipping.
Unrealized benefit: Plastidip makes decent road debris protection.

I had the hardest time resisting the urge to paint it when I painted my inner grille pieces (They were really faded). It looks terrible on a black 9-2x as well. I am probably going to wrap it in a brushed gunmetal 3m vinyl and hope it stays decent looking.

lol I got paranoid about kinja-savy people at work this morning. After you mentioned the avatar I thought “chrome or no chrome, that’s a poopy pic.”

That actually looks really cool, nice upgrade (just saw this post).

Did you take them off to paint or do a very good job masking?
