My 2015 Sierra just recently got a recall for “the welds weakening and breaking on the trailer hitch, which could cause loads to become unsecured.” I was planning on towing my side-by-side to my parents this weekend for an Easter Eve ride, so I called the dealer to see if it was something that’s a concern for heavy loads only or if there is something i can check and verify before towing. I was told not to tow anything until the hitch can be fixed (which is a minimum of 1-2 weeks for parts to get in, and then getting on their schedule which usually takes a week). I asked them if I could get a loaner for the weekend, and was instantly shot down.
My real issue is that I’ve had this truck for 10 months, and this will be the 5th time its gone to the garage for some kind of issue. What exactly constitutes as lemon Law? I know its 3 times for the same issue or 30 days of its being out of the shop, so does the 2 weeks for these parts to come in (as one of the main reasons i bought the truck was to tow things) count towards the 30 days?

It’s a real recall. Kinda sucks, but we have seen 2-3 trucks so far for it.

Anything I can look at to see if I’m good to tow my sidebyside (3200 lbs with trailer) this weekend? It’d be 250 miles round trip, mostly highway. I’m guessing I wont be able to get a loaner as most of the loaners would have the same issue. They dealer didn’t know off the top of their heads and they’re looking into it, but any other help is appreciated.

March 2016
Dear General Motors Customer: This notice applies to your vehicle, VIN: ________________________________ We have learned that your 2014 and 2015 model year Chevrolet Silverado LD and GMC Sierra LD model vehicles equipped with the 12,000 lb. trailering package may have been built with a trailer hitch platform that could develop cracks at the weld points over time. With heavy towing loads over thousands of miles, these cracks could potentially propagate and fatigue the welds. If the trailer hitch platform welds fatigue while the vehicle is being operated with a trailered load, that trailer could become unsecured. Your satisfaction with your 2014 or 2015 model year Chevrolet Silverado LD and GMC Sierra LD is very important to us, so we are announcing a program to prevent this condition or, if it has occurred, to fix it. What We Will Do: Your GM dealer will remove and replace the trailer hitch platform. This service will be performed for you at no charge until February 28, 2018. After that, any applicable warranty will apply. What You Should Do: To limit any possible inconvenience, we recommend that you contact your dealer as soon as possible to schedule an appointment for this repair. By scheduling an appointment, your dealer can ensure that the necessary parts will be available on your scheduled appointment date If you have any questions or concerns that your dealer is unable to resolve, please contact the appropriate Customer Assistance Center at the number listed below. I’m sure those numbers may have more info. From my side of things, the only stock is in Ontario Canada. Which for California means 7-10 days for shopping cause truck shipping and “over-sized part”.

So I don’t really have a answer. Looks like you probably shouldn’t tow.

Thanks. I haven’t received that letter yet (just an email from the dealer/onstar telling me the recall exists). Looks like that confirms what the dealer/I was suspecting so I wont be towing. I’m hoping they can pull something to get me in a truck that can, otherwise i’m going to have to borrow someone’s for the weekend. Thanks again.

Yeah, especially when I’m seeing that its been out there since mid/end of February. The first i heard of it was Saturday (after the parts department was closed), and I have been towing the side by side once a month (including 2 weekends ago). Its a little unnerving knowing that I’ve towed the RZR/Trailer ~1500 miles with this issue.
