Besides that, when I was 17 I drove 15mph over the speed limit wherever I went. Now I find myself going 5 under on the highway. So I guess my advice is to turn 30.

The human brain isn’t fully developed until the age of 25, and one of the last parts to develop also happens to be responsible for risk-reward analysis.
Basically, you drive fast because you’re young and stupid. I went through that, probably everbody here has. You just have to grow out of it and pray you don’t kill yourself or anyone else.

Realize that if you get a ticket as such a new driver you’re likely to face license suspension/delay/what have you and that maybe it’s a really bad idea.
If you’re having trouble controlling your speed, in other words, you find yourself going faster than you intended, spend time trying to hold an exact speed just using your foot. Don’t use cruise control or anything like that. Practice getting a feel for when the car is accelerating or slowing down, and for making minute throttle adjustments.

Like any rule, there is wiggle room, but not much. Need a real reason not to drive too fast? Look at this:
In case you can’t tell, that’s a 1996 Suburban. I was in the driver’s seat, and I had had my license for 1 month.
I was driving home from school at the time when a college Freshman lost control of his vehicle on the other side of the highway. This 70-mph road had no divider, just 15-feet of flat grassy median. He hit me head on, I don’t even remember seeing the other car. I was in the hospital for weeks, and spent 3 months learning to walk again. I broke 4 ribs, 2 vertebrae, my pelvis in 12 places, the tailbone, both legs, and crushed my left foot. I was lucky, the poor kid who hit me died on impact.
That is how fast things can change; on a clear day, without a cloud in the sky and not another car on the road for miles.
I’m not saying you need to follow the speed limit all day, every day. But you need to know you limits and that of your vehicle. That’s what these next few years of driving are about, don’t waste them.

As you drive more (and if you’re paying attention to it), you’ll start to develop a sense of the speed of your vehicle without having to explicitly check the speedometer as much. It’s a useful thing to work on - every so often guess what your speed is and then check it against the speedometer. It almost goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway:
make sure you stay aware of your surroundings
. Don’t spend so much time looking at the speedo that you lose track of what’s happening down the road (or alongside it).
Let’s see.. other stuff:
Cruise control is a very useful tool, but practice highway driving without it too so you get better at managing your speed with your foot.
Stay with the flow of traffic. Don’t feel you need to pass people unnecessarily. Street driving isn’t a race*.
If you’re driving a manual you’ll also develop a feel for what RPM corresponds to which speed in each gear.
Thumbs up for recognising that unintentional speeding is something worth working on correcting. Good luck!
* - if you do want to learn what it’s like to push the car more, I’d suggest autocross. It’s a good way to learn about how your car behaves near its limits in a controlled environment, and autoX folks are generally friendly and helpful enthusiasts with all sorts of interesting vehicles. There are a good number of people on oppo who can talk about it in more detail if you want to know, or you and your folks could get in touch with your local SCCA club.

That’s the problem, you don’t know the limits of your car. Have you had performance driving training? Have you practiced emergency avoidance? As a former young person, I know that the hardest thing to do is admit your ignorance. Trust me, if you only have 1 month of driving experience, you are ignorant.

I had my license suspended at 17 and had to pay tickets, court and classes after being charged with 59 in a 45 and improper lane change. Actually i was racing and the 85mph speedometer was pegged. Luckily was not arrested as my passenger was the cops neighbor. Let off easy but was the last straw in my string of tickets. Dropped from my parents insurance and paid $120 per month to insure myself in 1985 making a whopping 4.25 an hour part time...I could still afford to drive but little else. Dont fuck up. You are young and relatively poor. You really cannot afford a multiple thousand dollar bill for a large speeding ticket.
I can afford it, but that doesn’t make it pleasant. Dealing with the Justice system is never pleasant.
And you really do not know the limits of what your car can do. You really don’t.
Learn to be mellow and chill when driving. I didn’t learn that until 26 when I had my first (and so far only) crash. I was lucky as I walked away. Now I don’t care if someone else wants to act the idiot in their car. They can pay the idiot tax and insurance surcharges.
Put on the Carpenters and just chill out, out else I put you in a W123 240D automatic.

If you’ve only been driving for a month, and on public roads, you don’t know the limits of your car. That said, it’s really good that you’re expressing an interest in controlling your speed and staying within the limits of both the vehicle and yourself as a new driver (right now, the car’s limits are higher than yours).
I mentioned autocross in my other reply as a good means of getting a feel for the limits of your vehicle in a controlled environment. It’s relatively cheap, fun, and educational. Frankly, I wish someone had told me about it when I was first starting to drive.

You have to learn it on your own. It sucks, but when I was 16 I wouldn’t believe a damn thing I just said. I was the best driver in the world, I new how to solve every problem, and nobody could tell me different. Just keep in mind that you’re new to this driving thing, and that you should look at those signs that were designed and agreed upon by DOT Engineers with decades of experience and hard science behind them and say “hey, there are a few extra cars on the road today, I’m gonna drive the speed limit.”

Seriously, props for making this post and asking about it. That shows a better attitude than many other people with newly minted licenses.
For speed sense, it really is just a matter of practice. Keep making an effort to be aware of your speed and you’ll get better at it.
#1 thing I would say to you as a new driver is to work on your situational awareness. It’s much easier to stay out of trouble when you know what’s going on around you. That’s down the road as far as possible, beside the road, beside your car, and behind you (while being aware of your speed, and how much distance it would take you to stop given your current speed and road conditions). There’s a really good aviation saying that applies to driving as well: “ The superior pilot uses superior judgment to avoid situations requiring the use of superior skill ”

Not to pile on, but......
You have no idea about the limits of your car. We’ve all been there so there’s no judgment from me on that end.
Let’s play the hypothetical game: let’s say you and your car are one when you’re behind the wheel. None of that matters when you’re on public roads. When you’re driving you have to account for yourself and all the idiots around you. You can never account for pristine road conditions and the human brain can’t perfectly calculate road conditions.
I’ll give you a few personal examples from just the past couple weeks that have absolutely nothing to do with me:
1. Driving around 65-70 in a 65 zone. Woman ahead of me was running off the road and into the adjacent lane because she was doing her make up. I honked my horn at her and she sped up to around 80 and continued to swerve. Doesn’t matter how good I am if that woman comes into my lane because she’s looking at a mirror and not the road.
2. Guy watching a video on his phone nearly side swiped an 18 wheeler during rush hour traffic
3. About 10 years ago I was driving home late at night and crested a hill only to find a bunch of garbage in my lane suddenly. I swerved and wound up missing the bulk of it but ran over some glass. Had I been speeding I may not have reacted quickly enough or that glass would’ve led to a more severe blowout on a windy road.
No matter how good you are or think you are, you can never fully account for the stupidity of those around you or sudden changes in the status quo. Just slow down a bit and enjoy what's around.

You’ve only been driving for a month? And you “feel” like you know the limits of your vehicle well enough to avoid a bad situation, and you’ve also determined that speed was not a factor in Goatboy’s horrific crash?
Dude... If you’ve only been driving for a month and you’re still a teen, aren’t you supposed to be driving under the supervision of a licensed adult? If you’re not, what the fuck are you doing behind the wheel? You CLEARLY are NOT prepared to be driving solo yet, and quite frankly, your know-it-all conceit makes you a danger on the road to other drivers.
How many “oh shit” moments have you had?
Have you ever hydroplaned? Ever slid on black ice? Ever found yourself in the path of a drunk driver? Ever been brake checked? Ever been followed by someone with road rage? Ever had a front tire blowout at highway speeds? Ever hit an animal as it crossed the road and you were unable to avoid it? Ever had a semi not see you while you were temporarily in its blind spot right as it decides to transition into your lane? Ever driven in blinding rain? Ever driven in wind so strong it can push you into another lane? Ever driven in blinding rain COMBINED with wind so strong it can push you into another lane? Ever been stopped at a light when you see someone behind you blithely unaware of the red light and you see that they’re making no effort to stop? Ever had your power steering fail while you’re driving? Ever had your brakes fail while you’re driving? Ever had your electrics fail while you’re driving thus temporarily knocking out your brakes AND your power steering? Ever had your gears slip from a faulty transmission? Ever had your ABS fail and had your wheels lock up? Ever driven with the traction control off on your car? Ever had to take evasive action at speed to avoid a collision while keeping control of your vehicle?
No. I didn’t think so.
When you’ve been through ALL of those things at least twice, WITHOUT wiping out, then maybe.... Just MAYBE you’ll have BEGUN to approach knowing your car and its limitations, not to mention your own.

I’d rather be harsh with him and hopefully get through that extraordinarily thick adolescent skull with its adolescent brain that’s still inadequately capable of assessing risk, than for him to have an accident like the one Goatboy described.
Did you even read the reply he wrote to Goatboy? It was the equivalent of “well, that’s just what happened to you because clearly that dead kid was an idiot.” The thing he doesn't realize, or is unwilling to admit, is that even the most careful young driver can find themselves in a deadly situation.

“Well I don’t have a ticket yet nor I am I asking for one.”
You also have a major attitude problem. That needs to be fixed first.
To be brutally honest, you are the case in point why most all states went to graduated licensing, and some even raised the full licensing age to 18.
With an attitude like yours, if it were widely held by 16-18 year olds, I’d propose permitting at 18 and full licensure based on a very thorough exam at 21.
You are showing that you do not take this seriously, and if you do not, then you ought not to be driving, period.

There’s no kinda about it.
I guess he won’t stop until he kills someone or is paying GTA rates for insurance.

This is their problem. They shouldn't let you drive if you keep speeding. Quite simple, if you fuck up, no driving.

So then your only real option is to slow the heck down. Which you need to control yourself.

One of your other comments on this thread.
Seriously. You need to work on your attitude, or you will end up in a crash. Best case you only hurt yourself with minor injuries. Worst case you kill someone else and you have to live with that for the rest of your life.
By not taking responsibility for your actions and treating this very cavalierly, you are demonstrating that you are not mature to handle a car on roads with other people.
And until you fix that attitude, you will end up in crashes (that won’t ever be your fault when you retell the story), but you will always forget that even when it isn’t your fault you have to deal with the fallout (because your car will still need to be fixed, and your insurance will increase).
If you have only been driving for a month, get over yourself. Admit you suck because you have no real experience and change your attitude.
Your life may just depend on it.
