There's no accounting for taste... *UPDATED*

Occasionally we get someone in from a dealer who has interesting taste. We don’t judge, but one of the local, shadier buy-here-pay-here lots sent this. The interior of this 200 was trashed. He wanted this color. The boss made him pay for it up front.

Exterior:

Kinja'd!!!

Note the multiple spiderwebs where the windshield had been smashed up

And now, inside:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Strangely, though, I feel like in a black interior car it wouldn’t be so bad. But this is just busy and ugly.

*UPDATE*

The guys came back. They said it looked bad. We repeatedly tried to talk them into the recommended tan to match the inside. I said, “too bad. We warned you already.”

Just curious, how much does it cost to have that done? I can’t fathom buying a 20k car and then immediately spend 5k on the brand new interior.

I can't even begin modding a car until it's paid off and the warranty is long gone. But as we discussed elsewhere, homeownership!

If you were to walk into our shop and ask for a leather interior for a typical 2 row vehicle it'd be around $1000

I agree 100%! The white plastic ruins it.

Friend of my parents bought his first big boy car in the early 90s when his architecture business skyrocketed with all the rebuilding in the former GDR after the wall came down. Got a black 325i convertible with red leather. Bold choice but it looked really good.

Also, this was a buy here pay here car dealer. I don’t also, this was a buy here pay here car dealer. I don’t know his reasoning for the red, because we tried to talk him into a matching tan. However, he insisted.

You think they’d replace the windshield first. What with the huge spiderweb on the drivers side and all.

As for the color “scheme”... some people are color blind. That is the only possible explanation for the silver/black over black/tan(white?)/red.

That’s not bad for most retail. Cruiserparts.com has the foam for a reasonable price - I think the last customer paid ~100 apiece for all 4 big pads

I’m a fan of red or blue or green interior. It definitely breaks things up, especially when the car is boring. But it’s the juxtaposition of grey, black, red, and tan that makes me all “ugh.”

They tend to go on a little loose - makes it much easier to install - but they’re attached to the foam and frame of the seats with hog rings and clips just like factory seat covers. Then we hit them with garment steamers and let the cars idle for 20-30 minutes with the heat on that shrinks it down to the foam pretty well.

We offer lifetime warranty for the seats and it holds up really well. The operations manager at our branch has had the company leather in his truck since fall of 1999 and it still looks and feels good even with minimal maintenance.

Of course the installation has to be done right, too.

Just red seats with everything else black - good choice. The tan here suggests the red seats and door parts are from a salvage yard.

Well it was bought at an insurance auction and will sit at a buy-here-pay-here lot until it’s “sold.”

The tan cloth was so badly stained I think someone may have died in the car.

The red itself is actually pretty nice, it’s the combination of red and beige that is jarring. Not sure if the Packardesque tritone effect is really working either.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s color of choice was Cherokee Red, and it’s mine as well. This color has a bit more purplish hue, and if it was the color of the entire interior, very nice. But this? Someone color-blind will probably wind up with it.

Customer: Can you paint a giant penis on the hood of my car?

Painter: Sir, why would you do that? It’s going to look awful.

Customer: Can you do it, or do I need to find someone else?

We’re in Charlotte. It’d be around $1000 if we have the pattern for it. What kind of car?

We use patterns based on factory cloth and it takes about 3-6 days to get the sewn-up kit into the shop and about 2-3 hours for the installation.

Aren’t you in Louisiana?

There’s a location near Lafayette and they’re good down there. You can find locations here

But we definitely have that and can do it however you like.

Here’s a .pdf of the pattern. That $1000 is for a single color interior. Extras like contrasting stitch or two-tone are $50 each. For an extra $100 we could do harlequin if you really wanted with every panel in a different color.
