I was following behind a Volkswagen sometime last week, I think it was a Passat wagon. This specific wagon had this large sticker on the back window, how is this okay?

What’s wrong with that?

It’s not, and they shouldn’t.
To be fair thought I made a variation of that for my high school XC team t-shirt. Our mascot was the eagle, and to be fair its a cool design that just has some bad history to it.
Also the swastika is a cool symbol aesthetically but the Nazis ruined it for everyone.

It’s a like a scarecrow. It keeps other predatory birds from stealing his hood ornament. Totally functional.

Not sure if you’re joking. If you’re not its bad because it’s based on this:

I’m not sure if it has the history that the Swastika does. However it’s history has been tainted and therefore it’s still hard to use without looking terrible.

I wanted to get a picture but I wasn't fast enough. Basically, I'm not sure.

I’ll bet the folks driving around in that Passat don’t even realize what it means - just thought it looked cool...

Possibly. But it was in an area with a population mostly of German decent. But they could still be clueless.

I saw that too while searching. However this one was clearly modeled after the Nazi one.

And VW was started by Hitler *clutches pearls*
Stop trying to erase the past, lest we forget it’s lessons.

The ‘Eagle of the realm’ is a German symbol that was misused later by the Nazis. This while some would consider poor taste is 1, making a mockery of how they used it and 2, combining the German eagle with the logo of VW.
Sort of like this T-shirt and the current situation.

It’s not it's not trying to forget it it's trying not to make a mockery of it.

Which was in turn based on the German coat of arms.

I see the vague resemblance but one couldn't claim that's what it's meant to be.

That’s exactly what it is.
Also, similar designs have been used since the Roman empire.

It’s kind of like(talking mascot here) Louisville Cardinals versus Ball State Cardinals. Both are the same bird, both represent universities however they are still different and you don't want to confusing one with the other.
