Kinja'd!!!

I was just trying to drive back to school. And then I got stuck in a traffic jam. Then the car said ABC, drive carefully. Then it quickly changed to ABC, VISIT WORKSHOP in bright red letters. The S600 is falling apart on me. And after I treated the car to $600 brakes on Monday and a $300 A/C recharge on Thursday.

F**k me sideways.

I’m no expert, but I used to have an ‘04 CL500 and the ‘ABC’ lit up on the dashboard after pressing the ABC Sport button on the centre of the dash. Turns out the compressor pooped itself and it’s a hefty £££ replacement. ABC hydraulically controls the suspension, stabilty etc.

Did you press any buttons or did it just happen out of the blue? There’s a chance it may just be a burst pipe and loss of pressure so check for hydraulic fluid where the car’s been sitting if you can.

The other thing to check is if the ABC has a service interval and when it’s due. There may actually be nothing wrong with it if the car feels fine.

My Allroad laughs at your struggles as it leaks oil into the night.

How do I put this in the gentlest way possible?

Kinja'd!!!

Well over $2k installed, around $1k for the part.

Did the suspension collapse? If yes, probably a leak. If not, probably a jammed valve or pump. If you’re lucky a flush will fix it.

No service interval. Which is stupid.

So if a pipe bursts the suspension collapses, meaning that the pipes are pressurised at all times? For some reason I assumed that they would feed the dampers which would have their own actuated valve arrangement which would mean pressure could be reduced in the system once the suspension was ‘pumped up’ to the required severity.

No. No collapse. Just the light out of the blue rolling down the highway. Parked it and it sagged down on the one corner due to the bad valve block like it always has. Had to move it somewhere it could stay overnight and be towed in tomorrow morning and it didn’t even try to pump fluid into that shock.

Could be the valve block getting worse, or any number of other things. Wish I could offer more info, but any guessing is useless at this point until we know what faults it has.

According to the Mercedes forums, “If you can afford a $100k car, you can afford for the dealership to repair it” - which is exactly why I can talk my way out of ever owning a Mercedes, despite how tempting they can occasionally get.

My girl had something similar happen to her R23o. Turned out to be air leaking into her ride control suspension or a valve needing cleaning, which wasn’t too bad to fix. So hope for that but prepare for a the worst case scenario in replacing the compressor.

No advice on how to DIY repair it. Mercedes owners tend to lack the DIY enthusiast mentality you see on a lot of other sportier or budget cars.

Hence, the reason why I tell people that if you’re gonna own a car like this, budget at least $4000-$5000/year for repairs and maintenance.

I wish I had an answer for you, but I don’t.

Is a ballpark of about $2,500 for the worst case scenario on the pump about right?

Yeah, I think so. But keep in mind I rarely see prices on things.

Yeah...I bought my S600 in June and have put ~$4000 into it since the . Though most of that was on one repair.
