"Slant6" (slant-6)

I just want a cheap, basic, and non gaudy looking head unit to replace the old one in my Ranger. The 6 disc CD player doesn’t work and as much as I love NPR I’d love to play some of my music while I drive. Right now I have a crappie fm transmitter.
I’d like am/fm/aux. Bluetooth would be nice. I dont want it to have painted silver light up buttons or whatever. You know what I mean. Just a nice flat black radio. If such a thing doesn’t exist I’ll try and design/ build one.

I could consider one for the ML. Hate how ugly most new head units look in an old car though.

Walmart ?
It still has one silver knob but it’s better than most.

SoundStorm ML41B Bluetooth Enabled, Single Din, MP3 Compatible, Digital Media, FM Receiver https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T3QC096/…
How’s that for cheap? (No AM band, if that matters)
Quality, I’m not so sure. I bought one like this for my motorcycle but have yet to install. I would have gotten this Bluetooth one, but I’m very limited on data as its a work phone.
So I got a 32G flash drive.

Single or double DIN?

The widest selection of good, honest, cheap head units is in single DIN, which since I believe your Ranger is double din, would require an adapter. That being said, the adapter one gets at Best Buy or the auto parts store for a Ranger fits pretty well - I have helped someone do exactly that. The adapter has a slot over the bay which is sized about right for a smartphone.

I have room for either.

That’s actually not bad. I like having AM when I go through the mountains But it’s not a requirement.

I’ve bought two single DIN head units from Crutchfield. One Alpine (sounds great easy to use) and one sony (ummm... not impresed). Both come with wiring kits and a blank if your car is already double DIN sized. Maybe not the cheapest price but they include everything you need for the install with instructions and have a great selection.

I’d probably just have an aux and an amplifier behind an unassuming black face panel. Just real basic and classy looking.

I didn’t notice that until after I linked it, I just knew of sub $25 units because I just bought one, and since no CD it’s only 4" deep.

If single I think the Blaupunkt ones seem the least busy/gaudy. If going for double, I would go with what I got (AppRadio 3 though I will go with a newer one in my next car if there isn’t integrated inphotainment) or the Boss and Sony units can be found in simple configurations.

+1 for Blaupunkt. The Jersey 220 has Bluetooth cd/am/fm USB and aux, and looks almost like a factory unit.

I’ve had two Pioneers now; one single, one double. The single had a bit of the gaudiness, though really wasn’t bad. The double was about as elegant as the unit it replaced. It is, after all, just a screen with tiny buttons on the bottom.
I will say, the audio quality from changing just the head unit went up dramatically. The BRZ gets made fun of frequently (and rightly) for its utterly awful stereo, but replacing the head unit has made it one of the best (if lacking in bass punch) systems I’ve heard.
Have a look on Crutchfield, see what they have in your price range. Pay attention to reviews, etc...

I have a Kenwood KDC-152 in the BMW and it was the best mixture of price/looks I could find.
No nasty silver bs, nice red lighting (though they offer it in other colors like a green close to what ford used in the era of your ranger), and it has CD/Aux on top of the normal AM/FM. Faceplate comes off too if you care. I think I paid $80.

I recently put a Sony XAV-68BT in my Mariner for the very reason that it was the least gaudy head unit I could find with decent reviews.

I have a Sony something or other in my F150 and it's perfectly acceptable. Plays CDs and charged my phone.

I think this is pricey for what it actually is, but you’d get the AUX and keep the OEM look.

Depending on what other Ford units might fit the Ranger, you might be able to put some other OEM unit in there, too.

I want one of these in my miata. I hate all other head units they all look the same and the screens are stupid its 2016 they should all be nice bright HD displays.
I like buttons that do one or two things not 6.
The down side is a used one is like $90 on ebay.
