So since I will be starting up at KU in the fall, I am in need of a computer that wasn’t made in 2006. According to the school I will need at least either an i5 or i7 processor, 8gb of memory, and 500gb HDD. I’m going to go the used route and see if I can find a nice one for a good price, I just have no idea on good brands and products. Only laptop I’ve used regularly was a crappy Toshiba that makes my life a living hell. I’m leaning towards a HP or Asus of some, but any recommendations you got I’ll take!

A McLaren M8D for your efforts.

Buying a used computer is like buying used underwewar.

Not only is it old and outdated, it’s probably messed up in ways that no one can clean.

Go new.

I’m an Apple person, so I will recommend a refurbished Macbook. Trip on over to the Apple Store site to see what’s there. You spend a bit more, but you get a quality machine built solidly. Also, Apple refurb is like buying a CPO car. It’s the safest way to avoid problems.

If you want a Windows machine, I think I’d choose HP over Dell or Asus. I used to recommend Dell, but now I think they’ve gotten cheap (in the bad sense of the word).

Toshiba, Acer, Asus or Samsung. I wont even mention other brands because they’re crap.

If you want Apple, I would strongly consider the Refurb store, they come with a one year warranty just like brand new computers from Apple.

If you’re more of a DIY kind of guy, you could also consider System76, I absolutely love their laptops, and I have installed Windows on several. Fantastic build quality, really easy to upgrade yourself, and you can be pretty sure that no one else around you will have one.

I used to fix computers. The brands I didn’t mention typically kept me in business. I don’t think I need to elaborate further.

With most machinery, as long as you aren’t clogging it up with porn viruses and carelessly torrenting programs and such, it’ll last a long time.

The specs you’re asking for are pretty standard on new machines; used is a bit of a gamble but sometimes you can end up with pretty sweet deals.

Honestly, if a 500GB hard drive is included, try to find one that has a separate solid-state drive to at least run Windows and your frequently used programs. Once you’ve had a PC that starts up in ten seconds it’s hard to go back to old ones.

Where stuff starts to get really pricey is if you're looking for brand name, high performance gaming stuff, like low-latency RAM and high-end graphics cards. Again, what you described in general is very easy to find at a reasonable price on the new market so you don't have to deal with other people's (potentially) problematic machines.

I’d recommend JNCS.com or AVADirect. They built my last machines to my specs. So you can tailor your machine to your preferred speed and budget.

Both have 3 year warranties too. JNCS has excellent customer service too.

But if you want super cheap...check out the refurbished machines.

I hate Macs...they are computers with training wheels.

Buy a Lenovo T- or Y- series and be set for the next several years.

But what you have to understand is that I buy used underwear also.

I hope they recommended an i5 or i7 because i6's don’t exist. I have an hp laptop with an i5, 8gb ram and 1tb memory. It was honestly not very expensive. I use it to run solidworks (which is pretty intensive) with largely no issues. If you’re going to be carrying a laptop around you might want to consider one with a 14" screen rather than the 15.6" ones which are much heavier.

See if you can get a refurb’d Clevo or Sager

The nice thing is that the CPU and GPU (yes, I’m serious) are swappable, plus usually four RAM slots, and mine has two m.SATA and two full sized SATA3 hard drive bays, and pretty much everything is easily modifiable/fixable.
