Why do people dislike the Cube again?

Sure, in stock base model form it’s butt ugly, but with a few modifications in can look fantastic. The Chrome Edition really fixed everything that I didn’t like about the styling.

Kinja'd!!!

It was really one of the only real modern attempts at bringing a Kei-like car to North America, and it’s a damn shame it flopped.

Did it ever have anything to offer besides being small and “cute,” though?

I’ve never considered it because I assumed it would be a bore to drive, and didn’t quite have the charm of the original xB.

I used to hate them but I like them a lot now because they are so different. At first I didn't like the asymmetrical look with the wraparound window

I think’s it mainly a packaging thing. The shape gives it an extremely cavernous inside.

Doug ruins everything, that’s why! Nah, my only issues are the pubes. I’d rather go for the Soul, xB, and Element in that order though.

Nitpick - the Cube has never been a kei, too large and too big of an engine. The closest we’ve come to getting one is the ForTwo, which was briefly sold in a kei-compliant form (though not here).

That’s true, but the Cube was the closest one to bringing over the Kei design language and packaging, see cars like the Suzuki Spacia or the Honda N-One.

Yeah, I’m not a big fan of Jezza’s hair being glued to the dashboard.

The dash pubes are weird, but the headliner ripple is quite cool.

They asymmetrical wraparound window is partially fake though. There’s a blacked out pillar behind it. Would be much cooler if there was no d-pillar on that side.

I don’t know. I really like it. The styling was interesting and the offset rear window was interesting.

For me, my main complaint is the terrible mid-200's Nissan interior, and the uninspiring engine/tranny combo.

The Cube and xB have a special place in my heart. If I ever wanted to really express myself in a car, it'd be these two. Looks a little normal stock. The difference a nice set of wheels and some stickers can make on these.

I always forget about that one, it actually is an electric conversion of a kei.

I kinda like them. Sadly my wife does not. I tried to get her to check one out when we were car shopping last summer, but she wasn’t having it. The funny thing is she does like the first gen Xb. Said says, almost ironically, that the Cube is to round, and she doesn’t like the asymmetrical rear. I still wish we could have at least test driven one. Another reason they car loved is that they have CVT’s and lets face it older CVTs in cars were just crap.

Nothing a sawzall and duct tape can’t fix!

(Note: Don’t attempt to swap a transmission using only a sawzall and duct tape)

I always thought the third generation was too curvy (like, why is the dashboard so long, and the windshield so far away) compared to the second.

It’s sort of funny to see an American call this a kei. It’s really not.

But he has a point that it brought some of the style language.

I love the 2nd gen. I think it manages to be adorable without being a girl’s car, a near-impossible feat of design. I also think it’s unique without being ugly, something Lexus has never gotten right for all its years of trying. It’s one of quite a few funky designs I think Nissan really nailed - certainly not a one-hit-wonder for them.

Kinja'd!!!

I’d absolutely love to own one of these - every time I see one on the road I get giddy and yell CUUUUUUUBE! - but I don’t do autos. And I’m not big on a 1.3l FWD either. If I ever have a family and live in somewhere with dense traffic, I’ll get a Cube Cubed.

The only vehicle that looked like the Nissan Cube that I was kind of okay with, was a Mazda Demio modified I saw at an car audio competition.

I’m not sure about the kei car to US attempt. More like an attempt stockpile more “millenial” cars in dealer lots (no offense to Y-Generation folks)
