A 2013 oil burning Subaru Outback to be exact. Boxer 4 has given me hope with the extended warranty. IMO 1 qt in 3,000 miles is not acceptable. I’m taking it in for an oil consumption test. It really sucks, this is my second purchased from new Subaru and the both have had less than stellar reliability. This one is better than my Impreza but it scares the crap out of me when the oil light comes on. Should have bought the 4Runner...

In my experience, 1 qt in 3000 miles was a good run. But my experience was a very bad one in a WRX with a very badly rebuilt engine. Oil lights sound scary.

4Runners are amazing. I can’t argue that it’s not a good choice.

How much money could one save by owning a truck for 250,000 miles with low maintiance? Instead of buying new every few years. So would it offset the low gas milliage?

It was a 2010 4 runner with about 30k on the odo that was about the same price as the outback. At the time toyota had really good financing on used cars too...

1qr/1000miles is generally the accepted limit for oil consumption. Though I agree with you and would be super annoyed if my new car used that much.

In all seriousness most manufacturers specify 1qt / 1000 miles as the acceptable limit for oil usage. I don’t know what Subaru specifically specifies, but at least three other manufacturers that I am familiar with specified 1qt / 1000 miles as acceptable oil usage for gas engines. Source: me from a few years ago when I was a quality engineer at a Tier 1 supplier making pistons.

In other news you should check your oil when getting fuel, don’t wait until the light comes on.

Subaru told me that their specs are about 1/3 qt per 1000 miles. My previous 2002 subaru impreza used 0 oil between changes at 4000 miles. Since I haven’t had a car that actually burned any oil in the last 20 years I’m not used to checking it on a regular basis. It looks like it’s more like 1 qt/1500 or so right now, we shall see.

Exactly a new car with a 2.5L engine should not burn any oil IMO. If it was a performance car with a supercharged V12 I would expect oil consumption to follow fuel consumption. Shit I doubt an audi v10 uses that much oil.

The tech at the dealer just told my wife that engine braking causes excessive oil use. UMMMMM yeah..... might as well do an LS swap on the Outback.

I’ve heard this before too. But since I’m no scientist and have never done any first hand testing or seen and studies on the subject I’m not inclined to lean one way or the other. What I do know is that I wouldn’t accept that answer unless it came down from Subaru themselves in a published document (bulletin, owners manual, etc.)

FYI your HO doesn’t match up with the repair industry O. You may not have read it and you obviously aren’t doing it but your manual says to check your oil at every fuel fill up.

Will be doing this from now on. Also checking the oil on the subaru is a pain in the ass.
