Lets get some cool roadside architecture going.
This service station was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It was meant to be a revolutionary step in service station design. You may know FLW better for Fallingwater.
His Prairie Style architecture highlighted the horizontal lines on the Midwest landscape. He was also know for some crazy structural feats. At the time concrete and steel were still new construction materials. The engineering report for Fallingwater said it would never stand. FLW disagreed and tossed the report into the concrete as the foundation was being poured.
I guess The R. W. Lindholm Service Station could be considered similar to modern day highway rest stops but this was designed to be a social center in Wright’s design for a Utopian city. No more just coming in and pulling out. The filling station uses some impressive cantilevers .......
you know what, f-it, after looking for a couple more images I stumped across this. Jalopniks turned into the Simpsons, you think you have a cool idea and Jalopniks done it already.

Just post some other cool roadside architecture.

Slightly off topic, but the best use I ever got out of face time was when I was at FLW’s Fallingwater. Stood right the spot that pic was taken, called my buddy in selfie mode and then flipped it around. It was a pretty nice surprise for him.

I need to visit Fallingwater. I’ve visited the house he designed in NH and one in Buffalo. Fallingwater, Gugenhiem NY, and Taliesin West in AZ are a must.

I want to do a motorcycle tour in the midwest and see all these FLW buildings. I am a closet architecture porn afficionado.

I’ve been to Taliesin West too. That one was great.

You know they have had to do major reinforcement on Falling Water in the 90's to stop the house from collapsing into the river. Loyd Wright under sized the concrete supports for the main cantilever. The contractor, under major pressure from the owner, added more reinforcement when he built it, but it still wasn’t enough.
FLW was a great architect, but he was also a cocky little guy.

yea, but thats not bad for a structure that was 60 years old and more or less of an experiment. he was cocky and a bit nuts

Wow! That is a seriously cool gas station. I can’t believe I’ve never seen it.
I’ve been to Fallingwater four times now. It never gets old. In high school I got into a student residency program there, and stayed on the grounds for a week. We got to walk around the house barefoot, sit in the furniture, swim in the plunge pool next to the river, and my favorite was sitting on the bottom of the stairs down to the river and dipping my feet in.
Last time I was there, I asked my wife to marry me on one of the balconies.

FLW was more than cocky, he was a total asshole. But he was a brilliant asshole.
The actual problem with the reinforcement was the rebar they had back then was smooth, so it didn’t “grip” the concrete. Over time the rebar did what is called creep through the concrete and then the structure sagged. Modern rebar has ridges to grip the concrete and prevent creep.
