Hey all, I’m gonna be checking out an AW11 (not exact car pictured) on Thursday after 8 pm (I know I know, but it’s the only time we’ll both be free. Plus, there are well lit parking lots all over where he lives). I don’t know much about AW11s aside from the common stuff (The engine is where?!).
What sort of things should I be looking for ie rust in common spots for AW11s that wouldn’t cross my mind on any other car? All I know is that the miles are obscenely low (82,000), it grids in 3rd at high rpms and it looks like a turd. The seller is ditching it because he fixed his WRX and no longer needs it.

AW11s are the best! Rust is the big enemy with the worst places being in the a-pillar/door sill (remove the fender lining and look at it from that side because debris builds up in there and stays moist), rear quarter panels, and suspension towers. With mileage that low though, I’d be worried about all of your hoses. 4As don’t like their cooling systems fucked with. At all. Transmissions are stupid cheap and actually surprisingly easy to do (just unbolt it, remove the axles, and lift the car and it will be sitting there on your jack). You’re going to want one of the later C52s instead of a C50 though because of the 5th gear popout. Umm... the oil pressure gauge is for real (it’s supposed to move around like that and if it is, that’s good). Off the top of my head, those are the big things if it’s running right and not overheating. 4As are generally unkillable.

Sideways covered the rust spots to look out for, but also take a peak at the coolant and see if it looks relatively fresh or if the inside of the coolant lines are coated with crap. The low miles may very well mean that it hasn’t had any real maintenance for a long time.

I can’t blame you, as long as the body is solid and you can wrench buying a cheap AW11 isnt much of a risk
