and the replacement for the SV locked down:
the Yamaha MT-10. Basicly a naked R1.
165HP, 75lbft of torque. 440lbs ready to ride, and a 55inch wheel base.
compared to the SV:
75 HP, 47lbft of torque, 425lbs ready to ride, 56.1 inch wheel base
it supposed to be in canadian dealers mid july for 15k, and i’m probably going to wait a year for them to sort out any teething issues.
now. what to do with the SV? track rat? 1000CC swap? we shall have to wait and see

Nice! Yamaha have been doing great things lately. I’m thinking of picking up an FJ-09 for commuting and touring duty but that MT-10 looks like a load of fun.

Why not an MT-09 or Fz-09 (not sure which you guys have, if either)? They’re way cheaper and make just about as much power. Only thing lacking is the suspension market. But in my opinion everyone should buy suspension setups to match their weight and preference anyways. ;)

1:no ABS (daily driven bike, rain, snow, sleet, shine. this will ALWAYS be on my daily bikes. It only needs to save me once and its more then paid for itself)
2:no TCS (HUGE insurance discount)
3:no wheelie control (ditto to the above)
4: no Cruise control. (i do enocuh touring an commuting for this to be helpful)
5: they dont make as much power. they make 115hp. not 165

I’ve long believed they were detuned from the factory, as I’ve seen guys put down 115whp on factory setups with a tune. But, ABS and TCS are valid points. I’ve yet to actually ride anything with either so I guess I don’t know what I’m missing...

if they bring at LEAST ABS to it, I would strongly consider it. as it is, not.
the HP doesnt actually bother me THAT much. there is a bolt on turbo kit out there for it. but there is a difference between 15X WHP and 115WHP. ~40 horses worth

Dealer tools make things easier for certain items but aren’t really necessary. It’s just a load of Bullshit that “ Oh you need the dealer tool to work on this”

when our F800r needs the dealer tool to reset the service light after an oil change, and cant take a bulb change without throwing a warning up on the dash, its pretty needed. I’m not riding a bike with 45 warning lights blinking at me because i wanted nicer signals.

you want to know the REAL kicker?
I start riding at 16. I turn 21 on tuesday. 5 years of riding. got something like 100K km worth of riding and only 1 major off (that was like 2 days after I started lol)
And funny enough, I actually teach the canadian MFS course
the following vid was from a gymkhana competition i did. 4th place out of 50 in my first time out.
is it a dangerous sport to get into? no doubt.
Its also one of the THE most exhilarating sports you can do.
As to WHY i’m still alive? I need to ride more bikes.
HOW am i still alive? Cool head, big bag of tricks, and just a little bit of luck.

Well props to you man, bikes scare the shit out of me for the good and simple reason that if I run out of talent at anytime... it hurts. I do want though, but if I ever do, I’ll stick to something slow for a LONG time lol :)

key to riding: PAY ATTENTION. even if you THINK you pay a lot of attention in a car, in a bike you dont have a cage around you, you dont have a radio or air condition to fiddle with. you dont have your wife next to you telling you that you should have asked for directions 30 minutes ago and your now late (hehehe). You’d be amazed at how much those disract you.
keep your head on a swivel, and you’d be amazed at the shit you catch happening around you.
its really not that bad. just need to be smart about it, learn right, and for gods sake, dont jump on a 600cc+ sport bike as your first bike.

I’m already the overly cautious type of guy when driving a car normally (I value my cars way too much to screw them up stupidly), but also tend to have a very hard time resisting the urge of going sideways on japanese mountain roads when I’m all alone, or smashing it way above the speed limit when alone on the freeway... This is what scares me the most if I were to own a bike. I know that if I end up crashing, it most likely won’t be due to lack of attention, but most likely due to me seing empty road in front of me and feeling overly confident on something I don’t control as well as my cars.
Considering where I drive like this also, it would most certainly take a little while before anyone notices someone crashed lol... This is what worries me the most.
And if I were to buy a first bike one day, I would not go over 250cc and it would be some sort of old mid-70s light cruising bike...

and you know what? thats NOT something I would recommend starting on.
reasoning? old bike = old brakes, old suspension, who KNOWS what kind of maintenace history. crappy lights, crappy electrics and shitty tires. stuff that as a newbie, you know know what is a good or bad set of brakes, good VS bad tires, etc etc
best starter bikes, sub 500cc, and less then 10 years old. this leaves parts easy to find, and the bike cant have been abused or neglected TOO badly.
if you want something thats a little more retro, you can buy them. The suzuki Tu250X is just the first that comes off the top of my head

Oh for the history and the maintenance, it would be basically brand new... I’d buy it from a friend who owns something like 25 bikes and restores/sell them for fun. Modern tires, new brakes... Lights and electrics, well... it might require some tweaking regulary though...
I don’t plan on riding at night anytime soon though.
But that one you pictured looks very nice too though. I like it also. My final choice would most likely be based on the price tag. I spend way too much on cars already and if I were to get a bike at one point, I’d want a something cheap for sure...
