Sheep!
warning: graphic content below...
This dog is well known in the neighborhood. the owners are idiots. this time she went with animal control instead of the owners getting a polite call from us. They paid us $360 for replacement value of the birds (semi-rare-breed layers) Next time she gets a bullet. Dog is not well behaved. she growled at me.
We have a 5-foot high fence around the chicken yard, coyotes, skunks, racoons, etc have all left the birds alone. Took a Husky to get in, but she couldn’t get out.

Sorry about the situation. Shitty neighbors, to be sure. Sadly, I expect shooting the dog will not solve the problem, simply ameliorate it for a little while until the next one.

nope. the hen house is weasle-proofed with a bottom-closing drawbridge entry and no openings below 5-feet high otherwise. gets closed every night. we have a 5-foot high fence around the yard and we have absolutely zero problems with wild animals. the local always-running-loose-badly-behaved-husky-that-nobody-but-its-owners-like is to blame.

The sheep will have lambs this spring. if the dog goes after them we will shoot first and ask questions later.

I believe you missed the point of my post. I understand the danger the dog poses to your animals. But in the grand scheme of things, the problem is the neighbors, the most dangerous animal of all.

All good. In the moment, you have to protect your livestock. It’s just unfortunate that in the long run, you might end up in the same situation again.
I was vacillating among responses like “Maybe in Ted Cruz’s America you could,” or “Not with that attitude you can’t,” or “Accidents happen (wink),” but I guess the best one I can come up with is: This is why the old phrase “Good fences make good neighbors,” was coined.
(Thanks for clarifying on livestock, btw. Wasn’t sure whether that term was restricted to the sheep in this case or all your stock. Have been reading poultry reports for an Oppo project, and the distinction between poultry and livestock is made quite clear...thanks lawyers.)

Wow. So sorry about your loss. What sucks even worse is that it really isn’t the husky’s fault. It's the fault of his shitty owners for not properly socializing him and keeping him contained. I'm wondering if animal control will even give him back after the mandatory quarantine period. A known aggressive animal isn't something they like to return back to the public. What if that husky runs across a toddler or something?

chickens were killed two weeks ago. Dog has been returned. She was well behaved for the animal control officer (aside from pulling on her leash once he clipped it on her) she kew I was angry and wasn’t going to be intimidated, the animal control guy was a neutral party. In any case, they just kept her overnight apparently and we haven’t seen her roaming since... So maybe (hopefully) the wallet shock to the owners resulted in better containment efforts. I have several friends who have huskies. They are escape artists and have a strong prey drive, but if you aren’t a putz of a dog owner both of those can be managed. And if you can’t manage that, maybe you should try a Shih Tzu.
