Hey oppo, obviously we are all here because of cars, but that can’t be the only hobby or interest in our lives, right? Right?! So what are your other hobbies?
Above is a pic of my newest interest, making diorama’s for diecast cars (and yes, LaLD !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ). I find it fun because I can get creative and work with my hands. And I also collect small diecast cars. It’s cheaper than my last hobby, which was collecting game consoles and the games.
What are your other hobbies?

Owning and maintaining a house, two children and a wife.

Lego stuff. This is the only picture I have with me now.

Fitness, mechanical fun and exploring all on two wheels. Best hobby I’ve ever started.

I've been wanting the Mini Lego set, but it's too much for me. The VW one looks amazing though.

And buying/selling random shit.
And Hockey.

I did start to fix up the house, but then MrsZtp banned me from tearing things apart to fix them, namely outlets. She said I have to wait for gramps to visit this summer.
So....I kept my hands by building dioramas.

Mine are mostly kid or work-related. Coaching, Scouts, r/c flight (mostly quadcopters right now), some gaming. I’ve been looking for more to do with my daughter, so I jumped at the chance to help her with her latest art project - a metal sculpture. She’s learned a lot about working with sheet metal and brazing things together. It’s been fun.
If I didn’t have kids, I’d go back to motorcycling, hang gliding, and SCUBA. I miss those the most.
I used to enjoy cycling a lot more. Now it is more like exercise than fun.

I'm eager to learn how to scratch build scaled buildings. I think it would be pretty cool if I build my kid a dollhouse....with a big garage for all her toy cars, :).

Yup.

It's a silly ban, but I don't feel like arguing. Plus electrical stuff is pretty straight forward, IMO.

I like to build models, but my current living arrangements (rented room) don’t afford me the space to do so :(

I mentor FIRST students for 6 weeks out of the year during the build season. I’m the sole CAD mentor so it’s my job to train the students and after that, answer any questions they may have about something.
It’s been 5 years so far since I’ve designed a single part on the robot or lifted a finger to help them do design/drawing work. Exactly how it should be; student run and operated. I’m basically just a manager.

I built (put together) a dollhouse for my daughter when she was little. Turns out, dolls weren’t her thing. My son decided the entire house was the perfect place to park all of his cars. Every room became a parking garage. Then he decided that her play kitchen (courtesy of grandma) was also the perfect place to park cars. It was always amusing to open a toy oven and find row upon row of neatly parked cars. I was beginning to wonder if he was going to grow up to be a valet.

Ha, you can be anything you want. I don’t fit in the standard definition of ‘average’, so i always defend the activities and interests of things not considered ‘standard’, :).

Tent or rv camping? Either is awesome.
![]() 02/11/2016 at 09:36 |

Both, we don’t own an RV so if we are going on our own it’s a tent, but if we go with my parents we usually will sleep in their RV

I would argue that all auto enthusiasts aren’t “average.” We are way out on the tail of the “normal” curve when it comes to automotive interests. If you are in the tail of the normal curve on one thing, it’s likely that you are in the tail of the normal curve for other things.

The only other thing I really do is erg. Erging, or indoor-rowing, is my favorite form of exercise. I row over 1-million meters a year. I have rowed distances as long as a marathon.
I’m part of an internet based team and we compete in challenges on the www.concept2.com website.
I also have a number of gold medals from indoor competitions that I have competed in.
I had a few significant back injuries in early 2014 and I’m only getting back into somewhat competitive speeds again.
Here’s a pic me on my Rower:

Besides college stuff, doodling race circuits using any medium I can find and trying to finish some Oppo/LaLD features, I ride my bike,
What I do is that every Saturday afternoon, I set off with my crappy 20" folding bike and intentionally get lost, with the goal being I have to be home before 6:30 pm. It’s totally fun, doing that. Not only do I get to know shortcuts to get to big roads, I also see facets of Metro Manila I don’t always get to see. Sometimes I go berserk and ride on the more immense thoroughfares, but they’re shitty if you don’t cover your face.
I’ce since found lots of special and weird stuff in my random travels, but Tulay Tobias-Hemady is hard to top. The bridge itself isn’t really special; it’s the approach that takes the cake. Look that bridge up on Google Maps and use the street view.

Besides things with motors, I enjoy:
Snowboarding
Doing things to my house. (Currently pre-wiring for surround sound upstairs w/the equipment hidden downstairs.)
I have a couple frogs. A White’s treefrog, an Amazon Milk Frog (also a treefrog), and a Santa Isabel (poison dart frog). They are all housed in separate, relatively elaborate terrariums. So design/upkeep is a hobby on it’s own.
My group of childhood friends (about 20 of us) have stayed really close, and we all vacation together at least twice per year. Planning those types of trips is really fun.
To top it all off, I’m getting married in July. So planning for that has become a hobby weather I like it or not, but I don’t mind. My fiancee has done most of the work and left the fun stuff for me.

I’m a powerful wizard.
Haha, jk, I use software called Kodi (which is free to run) and there are “add ons” that are like apps that you install, pick your show, pick a stream and watch.
Done.
You can run kodi on many devices. I went from paying 105 a month for hdtv/cable/internet to 20 a month for just internet.

My most activieties (also occupational) are related to vehicles and engines. But I have some other hobbies too.
-CNC machining
-Cycling
-Spotting and feeding birds
-RC & modelling stuff
-Maintaining my house
-Fixing broken things
-Collecting old computers
-Tortoise (which spends most of its time with my parents as their home is more tortoise friendly than mine)

Ya we just went to just internet too. What is the stream quality like?
![]() 02/11/2016 at 11:52 |
|
It depends on what you’re watching.
And I really mean that. It can vary from show to show, the more popular the better the streams. I watch on a 1080 49" tv and it comes in crystal clear.
Streaming live sports tends to be a touch blurry, but again depends on the sport and what channel it’s on.
I run mine on an Amazon Fire TV box that I just got about 2 weeks ago, i was running on a Raspberry Pi B+ for almost a year when I upgraded. The Pi was just being overworked and the Fire has more hardware power. The Pi was freezing from overheating. 2 weeks and no freezing on the Fire.
I also use an antenna and an HD HomeRun device to put the antenna tv out on the networked internet and watch HD broadcast channels.

I keep trying that last one, she keeps telling me I do it at awkward moments. Apparently doing it with the windows open is a bad thing.
![]() 02/11/2016 at 12:04 |

pfffft, I do it in public, just too nummy not to.
![]() 02/11/2016 at 12:07 |

Thinking of trying an antenna but probably not much I can pick up in Bumblefuck, Canada. I have a computer I was going to just install on the TV for this very purpose but dont really have the room by the TV stand.
Im sure I would really only use it for sports though.

Just realized Kodi is what XBMC is called now, I know that thing!
![]() 02/11/2016 at 12:33 |
|
Haha, yeah they changed the name of xbmc, probably because they don’t support xbox anymore.
But there are great websites that you can type your address into and it’ll tell you what you can pick up and how big of an antenna you need. I know it works in the US but you can try it in canada, I use tvfool.com.
But you can get the Kodi system set up and watch any tv show or movie you’ve ever dreamed of for free. Netflix exclusive? No problem. Amazon Prime exclusive? No Problem.
And no need to pay for those services.
