So my dad’s B-day is days away as of now, so last week I too a trip on Ebay and went hunting for one of the harder Hotwheels to get. Hotwheels only made the R8 in 2008 (not counting speed machine of 2010) so nowadays they’re pretty rare. And pricey. Just one of these goes up to $70, though the shitlord sellers charging that much will clearly never sell. Average price for a single one is usually like $30 though, at least when I got these. These two right here were just $26. Still pricey but the best I could find at the time. Nowadays there just doesn’t seem to be many R8s in general.

Not trying to be one of the shitlord sellers, but is there actually money to be made in diecasts if you know what you're doing? I know obviously rarity plays a role, but I just wonder if it's even worth it to go hunting and trying to find the rares.

Yes, but for cars like this you will never know what you’re doing. Flipping chase pieces can be more reliable.

It’s a hard market to play if you can’t find the right buyers. I’m sitting on about 200 unopened examples and I can barely get 2$ for each one.

These should be absolutely worthless since the Matchbox version is much, much better and cheaper.

No offense intended, but you give me hope that when I decide to take the nuclear option and sell my collection off, I’ll actually get my money back.
Seriously, check out some flea markets one day. I’ve found a lot of cars like those you’ve posted for $1 each or less.

Ugh, I had like four of these at one point. I kept forgetting I already had it and grabbing a new one on every Target run.

Trust me, if flea markets were a thing in my area, I probably wouldn’t even have an Ebay account.

I really don’t understand the “Buy It Now” crowd on eBay. When auctions average $15-20 but you list your Buy It Now for $50-60, what are you thinking? Trying to hook a sucker? Get other people to ask that much so that yours is suddenly a discount?
I can’t decide if they don’t really want to sell, don’t understand the market, or are just trying to screw somebody over who doesn’t understand eBay.

eBay is dumb, but depending on what you have and if the right people are looking at the right time, you’re pretty much guaranteed to make your money back.
The diecast racket is pretty remarkable. 500% profit on a $1 toy might not be much, but I challenge you to find those kinds of margins on any other collectible.

Too bad you don’t have flea markets. I scored two mint condition Bugatti for 50 cents each. Best finds ever! I would love to have an R8 either HW or MBX. The only one I could get was an RMZ City version and even that costed me $8 at the time.

This son of a bitch was originally like $40

Yeah but has anybody actually paid that much for one? I’ve also found that sellers in Japan (especially with Kyosho diecasts) overvalue what they’re selling because they think Americans will bite since they don’t have many other options.
But ultimately yes, the toy racket on eBay is ridiculous.

If someone out there actually did, human extinction would suddenly seem not that bad to me.
