Or are the V8-powered S4 Cabriolets really cheap? $15k seems like a good deal for a convertible with a V8 and manual transmission and around 50k-60k miles. I remember R&T stated these would be a hot commodity in 2003, but it seems like this is not the case.

Your e46 would look like a honda in terms of reliability compared to this.

What you’re saying is, it would be cheaper to drive a steam car generating power from burning $10 bills?

My cousin had a v8 s4. It was the nightmare you’ve heard it can be. Loved it when it ran, but the dumbest crap would happen (gravel piercing radiators that are in front wheel wells) and it would cost a Honda to fix. A new Honda.

The V8s only had the chain guide problem. Lets not get into the e46s bullet proof vanos. Also audi parts are cheaper then BMW parts, dont ask me how I know...

Last time I checked the engine doesn’t need to come out of my E46 to fix the VANOS seals. Plus Audi parts are cheaper because they’re VW parts.

LMAO, fair enough, but a V8 is a rewarding mistress, noise and performance. And yes, they are VW parts, which are the same for Bentley, and Porsche , and Lamborghini, probably even Bugatti. Its cost effective.

Well I didn’t want to speculate since its quite unique with the 4 turbos and 16 cylinders and all. Yes, its basically 2 W8s together but there has to be more to it than that. Also the Side gills take design cues from the B5 S4, which was also used on the first model Touareg.

In fairness to the BMWs, I can count on one hand the number of M54 engines I’ve seen have VANOS problems bigger than simple solenoid failures, and that’s out of easily over a hundred we work on. I like the S4s, and the V8 is amazing, but the chains are definitely a pain in the ass. Seen one crack its cylinder walls too. But as with most things, the internet makes these problems seem much bigger than they are.

Lol true, Im still mad at the head gasket failing in the dead of winter, so dealing with removing everything just to get the head off was far from fun.
