What a difference a year and a half makes. In September 2014, this practically new 1991 Mitsubishi Minica Dangan ZZ-4 was going for $5,800. Now? $3,680. For a 30,000km example of the best kei car ever made.

Now, I’m sure some of you are thinking “how the hell is this thing better than a Cappuccino. Or a Beat. Or an AZ-1". Well, it’s simple really. This microscopic little Altoids tin of a car has a 660cc 15-valve 3-pot turbo that will rev to 9500rpm hooked up to the same computer-controlled AWD system that you get in an Evo I. And you can get one that’s barely even broken in for $3,680, before the boat.

You want it. You need it. I know I do. Look at the instrument cluster, and that redline:

Kinja'd!!!

Look at how huge the steering wheel is compared to the rest of the goddamn thing:

Kinja'd!!!

I told you it was small. Now look at how I’m pretty sure nobody has ever sat in the back seat:

Kinja'd!!!

And finally, don’t look at this next picture if you don’t want to be so overwhelmed with lust that you buy a ticket to Nagano to pick it up in person, because that factory exhaust tip:

Kinja'd!!!

Less than $3700, before shipping. Probably under 5 with shipping/other fees. For all that amazing.

There is nothing better than an AWD turbocharged kei car

And there’s no AWD turbo kei better than this one, except maybe an Alto-works drivetrain/front clip swapped onto an Alto Hustle:

Who wouldn’t want a bonkers micro Popemobile. The only thing more stupid cool than that would be an S-Cargo with the MA09ERT out of a March Super Turbo. Because supercharged and turbocharged racing-spec homologation-special engined snailvan. Nothing can possibly top that, especially if you give it a swiss-cheese grille like the Super Turbo had.

That S-Cargo idea is what dreams are made of. One of my favorite things about some kei cars is the asymmetry!

Also, the graphics

The great thing about the Alto Works (and the Cappuccino and the Cara/Autozam AZ-1) is the engine in them is probably the single most detuned engine ever put in a car. The restrictions on kei engine output meant Suzuki really neutered them at the factory, and you can take them from the stock 63 horsepower up to 130 or so with an intake, turbo-back exhaust and an ECU reflash, and the improved cooling the longitudinal layout in the Cappuccino gives you means doing the same can net you 140-150, and you can do this without impacting reliability in any noticeable way.

I can only imagine what the monster in the ZZ-4 is capable of once you uncork it, because seriously, you have to work hard to only get 63 horsepower out of an engine like that.

Ooh, what about a Vivio RX-R? 700kg, fulltime 4WD, and a supercharged 760cc 16V four with a ~9000rpm redline! There’s a bunch on goo-net, I like this one: http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/SUBAR…

LOOK AT THE LITTLE TE37S! I DIDN’T THINK THEY MADE THEM THAT SMALL OH MY GOD!

Too bad it’s missing the single best feature those cars have: the second-best “put too many words about the car on the side like a bottle of Dr. Bronner’s soap” graphics of all time:

Kinja'd!!!

You know how I know it means business? There’s a space between SUPER and CHARGER. That space is everything.

The best graphics, though, will forever be the INTERCOOLER 4-VALVE DOHC RS-TURBO off of the Iron Mask Skyline RS:

Kinja'd!!!

One of those, with a white top half and a giant PMC.S decal and a set of Hayashi Streets or SSR Longchamps would be everything.

Yes!! You can get 13" TE37s! And 14" TE37Vs!

Super Charger would be a good name for a drag queen.

I LOVE the Iron Mask Skylines. Those graphics are too good. On the sedans it covers almost the entirety of BOTH doors!

Kinja'd!!!

I love the two wheels you mentioned (especially the Streets) but I’m partial to a Watanabe (or similar). These are rad, though:

Now that we’ve gone totally off topic (and I don’t care), as far as stupid dream Nissan projects go, I’d do the following:

Step 1: get an Autech Stelvio, because Zagato crazy with side-view mirrors inside the front fenders and NACA ducts on the wheels.

Kinja'd!!!

Step 2: Throw out the engine/4-speed slushbox and find replacements for both by raiding its A/Y/R31 platform-mates.

Step 3: Get an RB20DET-R out of a Skyline GTS-R or even a Fairlady ZR-II.

Step 4: Get the transmission/shifter assembly out of a Hong Kong market Y31 Cedric taxi.

Step 5: Make all the world bask in my glory.

I’m asssuming most people followed me up until I got to the Hong Kong taxi transmission. There’s two good reasons for that. 1: It’s off of a big diesel service vehicle, so it can handle whatever grunt a tuned RB20DET-R will put out. 2: The shifter assembly, as demonstrated here:

H-PATTERN 5-SPEED ON THE COLUMN, MOTHERFUCKERS!

I thought of this. I am your god now.

It’s the comments, it’s okay to get off-topic. And this is the best kind of off-topic.

I... I don’t think that transmission would be the best for spirited driving. The fucking Autech Stelvio, though. What a car. That with a good drivetrain would be amazing.

Because of fucking course someone did this, here’s one on Advan three-spokes:

The Autech Gavia by Zagato is a MUCH prettier car (if not as cool), but I can’t for the life of me find as much info or photos of it, as it was just a prototype I believe:

The question was never “which is best?”

The question is “which is the most awesome?”

Five on the tree is the most awesome.

And fuck the Gavia. No mirrors in the fenders, no care.

Maybe the AZ1 has less valves and doesn’t rev as high. But RWD is more fun, and so is mid-engined gullwing’d goodness. This is just another kei-super-hatch I’m afraid.
