I absolutely totally did not spend over $1300 on parts in the last month. Okay, I’m lying.

Exactly! Used parts galore! Well my wheels (just 2 more months! The wait is killing me. lol) and coilovers were bought on significant discounts through work and a buddy’s hookup, respectively. My LCAs were used off a buddy’s car that got wrecked after hydroplaning into the back of a semi. The camber plates were new from RCE, they needed a custom top nut. And I just picked up a used JD catted EL header off FT86 for $650 shipped!

Seriously, the used market for these cars is awesome. haha

To be fair, only most of that was project parts. I did spend pittances on Benz rear brakes, Benz throttle cable, a Benz wheel, a Rover generator, and a Rover water pump kit. And yet, all that was a fraction of the total.

I will need to take a hard, long look at myself. In a reflective surface. Like one of my shiny new alloy wheels, for example.

I’ve bought then resold exactly one used thing (Nameless combo pipe that sounded like metallic farts) lol. After going through tons of used parts on my GTI I’d rather be the one to mess them up so now I’m buying all new parts. :) It is VERY VERY nice to have an actually active aftermarket. Every car I’ve owned before was either pathetic or I couldn’t afford it.

‘88 Supra - Not big and my car was an NA rusty POS

‘94 3000GT VR-4 - lol @ aftermarket that’s gone in the toilet

‘10 Evo X- When I had mine it was just a “decent” aftermarket, but expensive because all of the owners just paid shops to do work.

‘92 GTI - There’s TONS of stuff available. 95% used and abused though, or stupid stance or “style” crap

‘13 BRZ - Awesome aftermarket new and used

Yeah, I’m trying to figure out how I’ll keep the exhaust quiet with the rest of the bits. I’m figuring the JDL ultra quiet 2.5" OP/FP combo and a well muffled catback will do the trick. I’ve got time to figure it out though, I have the header now but probably won’t install everything until near the end of this year or beginning of next. I just jumped on the header because it was a great deal. I’ll piece together the catback, OP/FP, and EcuTek & tune over time.

I thought about it, and it’s actually more. $150 Rover repair parts, ~$160 in Benz repair parts, and about $1300 in project parts out of Summit and RockAuto, + another ~$40 in two discs and $360 in a disc brake conversion kit *about* a month ago. And then there was the $225 out of CJ Pony and off eBay. Hmm. So, it’s actually over $2200. Definitely the most I have spent on car stuff within a month in my life by a huge margin. Not even close.

Kinja'd!!! RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht > RallyWrench
02/04/2016 at 16:17

I actually sat back and thought about it, and it’s more like $2200 since around Christmas. Less than $300 of which went to keeping the Rover and the Benz up to snuff.

I’ve got JDL UEL (catless), JDL OP, JDL Ultra Quiet FP, & Perrin 2.5" Resonated CBE. Not overly obnoxious, in my opinion. My buddy has an ACE 4-2-1 (catless as well) with a Nameless axleback, also not overly obnoxious.

I think the catted header should help muffle things a good deal.

Kinja'd!!! Chris_K_F drives an FR-Slow > DocWalt
02/04/2016 at 16:20

Kinja'd!!!1

Yeah, I think keeping both cats and having the extra resonator on the FP will make it pretty tame. For the cbe I’m figuring TRD, Q300, or Nameless axleback with the 5" mufflers. Maybe a Corsa or JDL exhaust if I really want to splurge. haha

02/04/2016 at 16:25

Kinja'd!!!1

I can’t get over the tips on the TRD, lol. Q300 is supposedly really quiet, and that’s what I was going to buy until I got a smokin’ deal on the Perrin. The Nameless is nice but it leaves the crusty midpipe :(

JDL exhaust is gorgeous, but I was done spending money on exhaust at that point lol

Kinja'd!!! RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht > Chris_K_F drives an FR-Slow
02/04/2016 at 16:26

Kinja'd!!!1

The project car parts are; complete swap to front disc brakes (and an MC), five new wheels, a Mickey frontrunner to use as a spare, about half the front steering linkage parts, ball joints, front C/Os (springs and shocks), clutch throwout parts (lever, ball stud, boot, bearing), headers, hood latch pieces, and some other knick-knacks. So, I got a LOT for the money, but cheap parts do eventually add up.

Kinja'd!!!1

I honestly don’t mind the TRD “D” tips (heh, D tips...), but I guess I can get why it would bug people. haha

From what I’ve read the stock mid-pipe was left alone on the Nameless because in all their research they found that it was just as good or better than most aftermarket applications. haha I believe TRD and Q300 both actually have smaller mid-pipes than stock.

I’ll be curious to see how the ACE custom exhaust for CSG turns out, and what the pricing will be like.

I’d also very much like the CLEiB single exit catback, because single exit and turned down tips FTW!, but again that’s if I’m going to drop a lot on a catback. Which there isn’t much point to doing with these cars.

Kinja'd!!!1

heh, D tips.

Yeah, the factory midpipe flows fine even with the weird crush in it. Just ends up looking rusty and gross.

I bet the pricing will be ~$1200-$1500 for the ACE exhaust. Their header is gorgeous, but so is my JDL lol

I’d only do single exit if it was a racecar, I dislike blanking plates or empty exhaust holes too much haha. That said, the CLEiB exhaust is pretty awesome

I have some parts to make (C/O upper brackets) and another $300ish to spend on tires, and then it will actually be possible to roll said project around. Rust repair? Pfft. I’ll get to that. These parts are all about the vision of the thing. Regaining perspective... and they’re stuff I need anyway and which largely impacts finishing up the bodywork, so THE TIME HAD COME

Kinja'd!!! RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht > RallyWrench

Quite right. The daily expenditures were in aid of “the Rover leaks too much coolant and screams from the generator when you drive it anywhere” and three separate incidents of “the rear brakes are metal to metal”, “I have no spare”, and “the gas pedal doesn’t work” for the Benz. Rising to the point of actual function problems.

I’m all about single exits. haha I think it comes from growing up idolizing ‘90s tuner cars, when dual exhaust on a 4cylinder was considered rice. lol

I’ve got a Berk single exit track pipe now, and need to install the exhaust hole cover. I really wish someone would make a new rear bumper section that was just single exit though. The hole covers are a fairly lackluster solution.

It’s tempting, but A: I’m broke as fuck, B: I can’t see putting like 3/4ths of what the car is worth into the engine, and C: if there’s any one thing the Focus ST doesn’t need, it’s more power.

Seriously, I’ve had it for a year and a half, and not once have I ever thought it wasn’t powerful enough. A big part of what makes it so much fun is how it’s right at the point where any more power is probably going to be too much for the stock chassis, so even if you’re not driving it at 10/10, push it even a little and it feels like you are. If I were to do anything power-wise, I’d just go with the Mountune ST275 or maybe the ST300 package, which are much more affordable and won’t require me to upgrade like everything else just to make it drivable. Plus, if I get it through the dealer, my warranty is safe and it’s guaranteed to meet emissions in 50 states, which isn’t the case with the whole “oh here’s our race car internals and shit, we’ll sell them to you along with a new turbo and a fuck emissions engine program if you want bro as long as you’re made of money” parts list.

The ST300 package in particular is tempting, since for $3,500 I can have my dealer make my ST as fast as an RS, while maintaining my warranty and streetability. If I had that kind of free cash floating around, I would because why not, but I don’t and I get harassed by VW bros enough as it is.
