Hey man, I need some imput on the Dutch used car market, so i thought maybe I should ask someone in the know. Here’s a pic you, and everyone else might like, for your trouble.
My search for the ultimate 7-seater family hauler DD goes on, and right now I’m looking into a car I always liked: the Volvo wagon. Specifically the first curvaceous V70 from around 2001-2004 is the one falling into my price bracket, and to my surprise there are quite a few on sale with the extra seats in the trunk. Altough my wife isn’t too hot about wagons, she knows how comfortable big Volvos are, so this might just be the ticket.
Now the thing is, a lot of these are sale in the Netherlands, and considerably cheaper too, than in neighboring Germany. Can you tell me why that is? Is it some Holland-special tax thing, that makes otherwise good used cars cheaper, or is there some special problem I should know about?
Also, do you, or anyone else have some experience re: 5-pot Volvos with automatic ‘boxes? This should work as a comfy cruiser, so I’d go the full mounty, if there’s no big worry with the slushbox.....
cheers!

Just fielding a guess, I’d say it’s probably due to running costs in NL vs running costs in DE. New cars tend to be significantly more expensive in the Netherlands these days.
You should get a lot of neat and/or niche cars together and park ‘em in the shape of his username ... that’ll get him here! :D
One thing I’m curious about with the V70 is the couple of seats in the back ... can you actually sit in them? When I was a kid, I sometimes got a ride in the back of an Audi 200 (at least that’s what I think it was) with a 7s arrangement. While it was a hoot for kids, I don’t imagine it as comfy for physically bigger specimen. How old/big are those you’d banish there? :D

Another dutch guy is coming to your rescue here, I’m not really into the Volvo market right now, but the price difference seems weird. In general most cars in Germany are actually both cheaper and have better equipment then in the Netherlands. Otherwise you can rest assured since these cars were mostly driven by doctors and dentists, so most will have good maintenance records and will be in a good state, at least for the first 8 years they were, since these people tend to hang on to them for a while.
Edit: as m2m states above, it probably is due to running costs, should’ve thought about that.

this year my kids will turn 11, 9 and 6, so they’ll be small enough to fit in there, and kid enough to love it there. And we’ll only use it if there’s a grandparent, or a kid friend along for the ride, normally they’ll sit in the back seat.

thanks. I heard murmurs about car tax/insurance somewhat prohibitive on these cars, but then stopping at 25 years of age, which has the strange effect of nice 25-35 yo cars being more expensive in Holland than in Deutschland.... But it seems, around the 15 yo mark it’s the other way around.

It used to be even better for 25 year old cars, they were fully tax free, however now you pay a small amoubt but they cannot be used in the winter anymore unless you pay a shit load of tax based on emissions. However cars of 15-25 years old only have a benefit for small companies, not for the jalops who would like to drive them thus causing low prices, due to the lack of demand.

I’m a few miles south in Belgium. When I was lamenting car taxes here, he said that taxes up north in The Netherlands were similarly bad. I don’t think the taxes in Germany are as bad.

I’m Dutch and have (amongst others) two 5-pot Volvos. There’s nothing wrong with the slushboxes (although I still prefer Manuèl), a friend of mine just flushed his V70's automatic. After 350k kilometers.
Usually it’s the other way around: Dutch taxes make cars more expensive than German ones. Even used. Unless you’d export one, than the BPM tax is refunded. Maybe you see these “netto”-prices? And standard equipment may differ. We do have a lot of Volvos in the Netherlands. And bigger cars tend to be less popular, that could be a problem maybe.

I used Autoscout, and in that you can have cars from a lot of markets in the EU - so I had italian, dutch, german and austrian cars all on the same page. The most of the 7-seater V70s were dutch, and maybe that’s why they usually were cheaper too, although the one German is an extremely nice example.
I too prefer manuél, it’s just that I don’t have much against automatic either, when it’s in a DD or cruiser, and this will be that. Thanks for the good words anyway!

Where will the car be registered? Because when exporting the car you’ll have the BPM refunded so it will even be cheaper!
If you want me to (have) check it out (if it’s not too far away from me) just let me know.
And my Automatic is for DD (wasn’t available as a Manuèl in the first place) so it’s good. Otherwise probably NEVER!

As dutch guy, I personally use Gaspedaal.nl because it collects cars from multiple used car sites.
I’m just thinking out loud here, but could the price difference in cars be German pride? like why would a german buy a Volvo if he could buy a similar, probably cheaper, German wagon?

Just found out you posted this. Sorry, didn’t spot it before. Most things have been said I guess. Ownership tax on big cars, especially diesels, is very expensive in the Netherlands. The ownership tax is vehicle weight and fuel type based. About €70/month for a gasoline V70, €150/month for a diesel V70. As a result big old cars, especially diesels, are relatively unpopular and thus cheap. New they start out more expensive than in Germany, but after a decade and a half of depreciation that effect is gone. Insurance isn’t a problem in the Netherlands. You’ll spend a lot more on tax than on insurance.
If you want to have a car checked out in the Netherlands I could help. I live in the North (Groningen). Jobjoris, who responded as well, lives in the south. He actually checked a car (Delta Integrale!) out for me once.
If you’d need help with the paperwork I could help, and I’m sure Jobjoris could as well. I’ve exported before, and it’s rather straightforward anyway. You living in an EU country should make it easy.

BTW, maybe we could connect outside of oppo too? Are you available on fb, or reachable via the mighty goog? I already have Tim as my fb friend anyway, so just look for György Bolla among his friends, that’s me :-)
