For the past month I’ve been obsessing over mechanical racing chronographs I’ll never be able to afford. So, if you’re a jalop and into watches, here’s a nice time-waster. Above is the unofficial “Paul Neuman” edition of the Rolex Daytona.
A Gallet; one of Jim Clark’s favorites.
Bentley partnered with Breitling on this one to continue their tradition of unreadable dials.
Speedmaster Mark II. Omega wanted this, rather than their more famous first Speedmaster, to be their moon watch. Nasa on the other hand didn’t feel like testing an additional watch for space travel. Instead, Omega slapped on a snazzy dial and the Mark II lived life on the track rather than the moon.
And now... for all the Heuers!
The watch that started my obsession with watches was, as everyone knows, worn by Steve McQueen in Le Mans. What most people don’t know is that he made it a racing watch. The Monaco lacked a Tachymeter to calculate average speeds, a racing watch staple. With its square lines and artsy dial, Heuer actually intended this watch for architects.
Next most popular Heuer chronograph is the Carrera.
Silverstone is friggin cool.
Pasadena. A lot of companies made these under different names. I think Porsche Design has a modern interpretation.
<3 Montreal<3
The wacky Monza!
Temporada.
The other other popular racing chrono, Autavia. Named to communicate the watch’s dual design goals for aviation and automotive.
So yeah... what I’m basically saying in a round about way is if anyone could gift me some of these watches, or find me cheap alternatives, that’d be greaaaat. If not, I’ll keep obsessing.

Can’t help but think how hot that Silverstone would be without that gross band.

Fun fact: NASA wanted a different watch to be the space watch (I don’t recall whose) but had to put out a open bid for the watch, same as any other piece of pricey equipment. Omega submitted the speedmaster and crushed the watch NASA originally had in mind. Or so the story goes.
