People are dicks, I am so tired of people. People in my condo area all drive boring cars and single me out. I only get one space that is mine and the rest are guest spaces, even though all the residents use them. Supposed to be 24hr spaces. Plenty of, “normal” cars are parked for days but nobody notices, some people own multiple cars and nobody bothers them. They notice mine if it’s covered or if it’s uncovered (orange). Recently I parked it on the street one night because they put warnings on my car. That resulted in someone bumping into it while the tard apparently couldn’t back up (nothing behind the space they were in) and damaging my left rear area. So about 2min from my house is a storage place with rental spaces. I am considering renting one, they are $125/mo. I don’t know what else to do, in my line of work I can’t come home early enough and move cars, it gets to be a drag to do it and I get really fucking angry with the situation. I think what bothers be the most is that car enthusiasts get harassed, if I park my silver CRV for a few days nobody says anything (there is an identical car that parks here as well). They single me out and they can because it is the rule, but everyone else breaks the rule and has a beige car so it’s totally one sided. The Bay Area techies have driven up housing so having a small house with a driveway and garage is a luxury, like a G6. When educated couples with halfway decent jobs can’t afford a small house then something is wrong.

$125 a month isn’t bad; my cousin used to pay $400 a month in Manhattan for his wife’s car in a parking garage.

I’m in a union in SF, I can’t commute so far, it would kill me.

Yeah it’s not bad, this isn’t in a garage, but it’s close to my place so I can get it anytime. I have a very nice car cover, that I use here anyway. It’s a month to month deal so I can try it and look for other options.

I do shows, of all kinds, build booths and do I graphics. I just did the Super Bowl installation. People in my union have a wide skill set, we basically make shows happen no matter what it takes.

It really is a thing, you’re not alone. Unfortunately the only real solution is to find a private place to park. Though this can range from inconvenient to impossible.

Why not park the 240z in your spot and park the daily driver in the guest spot? I have 2 spaces in my neighborhood, but 3 cars. I park whatever I daily in the visitor spot so it isn't sitting for over 24 hours.

Honestly I don’t think I could live there. It’s like another country here haha, I’ve lived in other countries, Hawaii and here, I was a Marine. I would love to live far from other people in Montana or something but we have to work. I just don’t like the lifestyle or culture in some parts of the US. LA, Vegas and SF have most of the shows, Chicago has a fair amount and NYC but I really don’t want to live there. I have to go to LA to do the car show some years, E3 too, I hate it there. I hate Vegas too. Northern CA is awesome for so many reasons, driving too! So I have to accept some problems I guess. Hopefully real estate in some areas comes down to earth a bit in the future. When I get older and my union number is low I can work less and maybe move further away.

Parking spaces in SOMA now go for over $50k a piece. If you can get monthly parking in the bar area for $125 that seems like a deal to me. Is it covered?

Yeah the fucking Google, Yahoo, Genentech buses all over blocking lanes in the city, ughhh it pisses me off. On one hand I do shows and the tech companies keep us busier with Oracle etc.... but I don’t want to go anywhere.

Not covered, but I currently use a very nice custom cover. I have summer and winter covers actually haha. I can look for a covered space once I have this one.

This kind of shit drives me crazy. I lived in a townhome community several years ago. Everyone had a 1 car garage, and a driveway just big enough for another car. Between my wife and I we had 3 vehicles, so I parked my jeep on the street (which had parking spaces on 1 side). People would constantly single me out if I didn’t move it every 48 hrs. 90% of the residents didn’t even use their garage to park in (only to store useless crap). Especially the ones complaining. The developer did not design the community to handle that many cars. Not to mention some units had 4-5 drivers living in them. Having to play musical cars was my biggest motivation to get the hell out of there.

Yeah it’s totally fucked. The three bedroom places have 2 spaces and some don’t use them but complain if anyone accidentally parks there.

Continually amazed at bay area housing prices. I lived in Sacramento for a while and it was cheap ville by comparison.

Maybe one of your neighbors with 2 spaces but 1 or 0 cars would rent you a space for less than the $125/mo?

Good luck. I used to live in a sweet building in San Diego with crazy amounts of open parking in the garage (that I exploited whenever I pleased because my elderly retired neighbors were all chill Southern Californians). Up where I live now, nobody will even rent their constantly-empty spots. I’ve been here three years and asked when I came but the property management people said nobody has a spot they don’t use. I go down into an empty garage daily, but if anyone ever parks in another person’s spot or has a flat tire, someone will go batshit and get the car towed. It’s psycho.
Get me out of this place. I never wanted the suffering an SFH entails, but lack of parking and no willingness to share is making it miserable.
I feel for the OP’s plight.

I will see. I can post a flier near all the mailboxes. The space for rent is month to month so I can change if I find something.

Well I have only driven through Sac and it’s hot and flat. Within ten minutes of my place I have Mt. Tam and the whole headlands, surf, plus the gateway to lots of great driving roads.

Leave a note on it that reads “I saw your previous note and street parked. The car was hit then. I will do what was done to my car to your face if I find another note on it. And no. I’m not moving it from a space I’m entitled to.”

I kind of already called the property manager’s number and expressed my opinion on the subject of all the other cars being overlooked in regard to the 24hr policy. And I mentioned how my car was damaged the very first time I took it off the property and I then expressed how much I appreciated his actions and thanked him.... I was really fucking mad so I’m not exactly sure what I said....

They don’t know they are upsetting a USMC veteran, I want to take a MK19 to the property manager’s office, he is a fucking dick. They also won’t let dogs on any lawns anymore, only precious toddlers can run around them now. Are you in Japan? I lived there for years.

Thats cool, I wish we could stay there, my wife works for a Japanese company here in SF and I’m in a union that works on shows. My wife is Japanese, we go back fairly often. I try to get to a place I haven’t been every time I go. She inherited her grandparent’s house and her family is all in town so it’s nice to go back to. Maybe someday I can bring my Z back to Japan, I want to do the Fuji mountain rally.

Do you feel the need to get on with your neighbours?
If not, here’s the plan.
Find out who drives what car. When it’s been parked in a ‘visitor’ bay for longer than 24h. Go and knock on their door. Ask them to come outside and politely, but very clearly with anger in your voice, point out that their car is parked in a visitor’s spot and that people give you shit about parking in them. Don't specifically blame them in particular, but make damn sure that they know that you know it's them. Then walk away.
Next step. See if it stops.

There are too many people so I don’t know who is reporting it so judiciously. I know who is friendly to me and who isn’t but it could be multiple people. I called the property manager and left a message saying how plenty of normal looking cars are always left for three and even four days without moving. One family has four cars and a Harley and I haven’t seen half of their stuff move for days. I told him all the facts and I said I could start taking pictures of the parking lot if he wanted me to, I made it clear I thought I was being singled out for no other reason than my car is a classic and orange and noticeable. I talked to the storage place near me with parking spaces and I will get a space on the 13th. My car is going to be repaired since it was lightly crunched and then it will live there. Its 2min from my place and I can go park in the area, take the Z out and then return it. I have two very good covers that lock. The whole pisses me off, I am the type of person who really doesn’t want to deal with neighbors, I would love to have even a small house and build a huge fence around it and my garage. I deal with so many annoying people in show biz, I go home and want peace.

Yeah I’m another person who simply can’t be bothered to deal with other people living in such close proximity.
Luckily enough, we live out in the country with a decent wall of trees between us and the nearest neighbours.
Still, we’ve been told that we’re ruining their retirement by doing building work, and that ‘the previous owners were much nicer people’. This despite the fact that we’re building the planned extension the previous owners had got planning permission for...
Part of the reason I never want to live in the city...
