The Focus RS will be hitting US streets soon enough. If Mazda was not currently working on a new “RX-7", I’d say they should definitely be working on a new Speed3. What a great competitor it would be. At this point it would have to be AWD, and being Mazda they would try to make it as light as possible. I can honestly imagine that people who own or have owned Speed3s will be buying the RS because a new Speed hasn’t been produced. Just my two cents.

The interior of a 2017 mazdaspeed 3 would be nicer than a Focus RS too!

They could make a FWD Speed3 and an AWD SpeedSpeed3

I imagine it would look pretty snazzy. From what I remember about driving newer Fords, all the car/small SUZ interiors look basically the same. At least the steering wheel, gauge, and center console bits do.

I don’t know. My knowledge of car manufacturing is limited but with a small production level I feel like that wouldn’t make sense related to cost.

I think they make toasters. Also quad exhaust on this car is completely unnecessary me thinks. And not in the good way.

I’ve recently spent time in a newer Fusion, Focus, Mustang, and Explorer. They each have an interior that’s pretty decent for their respective segments. Well, the Mustang has some unfortunate cheap touches for how expensive the GT gets, but it’s still ok.

We can all dream Dwhite. Having it pop out of nowhere the same time as the RX-Vision would be pretty awesome.

Just don’t get one of their rotary powered toasters, they tend to burn the bread.

It’s not a quad exhaust, it’s a dual exhaust with dual-tip mufflers. Well, not a true dual exhaust. Dual mufflers.

Personally I think dual mufflers on 4-cylinder cars are stupid but even Mazda has done this on various cars including the Mazdaspeed 6 that I used to drive, and the Mazdaspeed 3 you posted.

I don’t think they are bad. Just bugs me to see different cars sharing the same steering wheel, gauges, etc. Driving for Enterprise over the last two summers has gave me some decent seat time in them. I actually think the new Fusions with all the options are pretty damn nice.

They could take the 2.5 turbo and awd system from the new CX-9, add some kind of rear LSD if possible (the old Mazdaspeed 6 had a similar awd system plus a mechanical torsen rear LSD) and slap it in the 3.

Whether they will is another question entirely. But the parts are there.

It’s nothing but added weight for the sake of symmetrical looks, and gives aftermarket exhaust companies an excuse to charge more.

I think it would be a huge advantage over the Ford if whatever system they use for the rear end is less complicated and more robust. I kinda cringed after reading the last FP article about the RS. The long term reliability and ease/ cost of repair for the AWD sounds scary.

I think this is the generation where they need to add Speed to all their cars, whether it’s the 3, 6, or MX-5. I’d say a Speed 2 would be an awesome hot hatch but that’s not going to happen for North America.

There is news that they’re working on a 2.5L turbo Skyactiv - I just found this out now since I know these engines are still pretty new and there haven’t been any turbo variants yet (as far as I know). 250hp should be just about right for any Mazdaspeed.

That ping you hear won’t be the sound of freshly toasted bagels. It will be a rotor ejecting it self through the body.

I’m really thinking about replacing my 2007 speed soon but without a new speed my options are pretty slim. What I really want is the international 2 but with a speed motor in it.

From what I remember the Skyactiv engines as of now are not great for forced induction. The compression is too high or something. I’d be plenty happy with a Speed3 and MazdaSpeed Miata. And honestly I think that is all they really need. A Speed2 would be pretty sweet though.

A quick search says they’ve got one ready for the upcoming CX9, although quoted power figures seem to vary between 230 to 250hp but torque is more than 300 ft-lbs at low RPMs. If it can be (reasonably) reliable, we could have a very exciting combo!

I would never consider a FWD speed3 again. It was a great interior and plenty fast but the torque steer ruined it for me. Still a pretty fun car, but AWD would make it so much better. I'd get one over an RS any day of the week just because I've always liked Mazda more than ford.

That would be fantastic, and with Mazda’s styling genius it might even look better than the ford

I had one, combine vicious torque steer, poor insulation on the undertray, a motor that slams the firewall under extreme load, and add in weird cloth interior, it gets tough to keep loving it.

Fix those things, and bring on the AWD, I’m there.

The RS was always a rally car for the road, but the 3 was just a lairy turbocharged hatch. I think the 3 would need several steps up (or the RS several steps down) for them to be comparable.

Mazda did the all wheel drive thing with the Mazdaspeed6, not many know about it or remember it for a reason
