I think I figured it out: you were mostly right, I think it’s a Hyundai-made version of the Mitsubishi 4G32 out of either a Pony or Stellar. That would also explain the 4-speed stick. (also note the wonky edge on the intake-side of the valve cover, the Hyundai versions are the only 4G3x engine that feature that as far as I can tell)
