I think the vice grips on the vacuum line are a nice touch.

Much better than the vice grips I use as a hood release.

That’s not even an Alfa engine, is it?

That’s ok, I like yours better. You’ve got downdraft carbs

I’m still trying to figure out exactly what it is... it appears to be a wedge-head design, it looks like a cross-flow engine, as I can’t see exhaust headers below the carb, but that valve cover is completely alien looking to me... it doesn’t look right for an OHC engine (also, no visible cam pulley), but it also looks too wide and flat for an OHV engine... i was thinking Opel valve-in-head, but those look more OHV-like.... WTF is it?

It looks late 70's, early 80's Japan to me.

but the 70's and 80's Japanese stuff always had some big cast or machined logo on them, it was a point of pride then because of tier “advanced manufacturing capability” this is just so.... anonymous... I did think maybe Honda, but I can’t find anything like it on teh googles... it’s not a Nissan it cross flows the wrong way...

it almost looks like it could be an early Mazda truck engine, the *shape* is almost right, but the breather vent location and the lack of cast-in logo/name are not right...

We’ve found the engine to stump all opponauts.

all of mitsu’s SOHC 4s flow the other way, and all the DOHC 4s have center spark-plug positioning, I thought i was onto something with the 12-valve Ford/Mazda SOHC engines as the shape is very similar, but again with the wrong flow direction and lack of identifying marks in the cover...

EDIT: I stand corrected, it *COULD* be a Mitsubishi Saturn (4G3*-series) engine with an unmarked valve cover

Ok, I think I’ve figured it out. You were mostly right, I think its a Mitsubishi 4G32... made by Hyundai and out of a Hyundai Pony or Stellar. This also explains the origins of the 4-speed manual trans.

Mazda. Probably from a B-series pickup. 70s to mid 80s.
