If the Army had Blue Angels, these would be they. Different crafts, but comparable dedication to perfection. 24 hours on, 24 hours off, and six hours per duty day spent polishing their boots. That’s dedication. Only one in ten soldier applicants earn the badge.

Perfection in everything but their haircuts. Someone get these guys a proper barber.

I understand discipline and all... but would the enemy care how shiny your shoes are when they aim their weapons at us?

This is purely ceremonial.

AR 670-1 says otherwise.

You may want to Google what the Honor Guard is.

Over the summer, I had the honor and privilege of being assigned (honestly, voluntold) to one of my post’s funeral honors teams. While it’s nowhere to the level the 3rd Infantry Regiment is at in terms of drill and precision, that same sort of honor and pride is there.

Last time we were at Arlington, we watched the changing of the guard and one of the soldier’s lost a button during inspection. Popped right off and landed at his feet. The sergeant stepped up to the guard and whispered to him, at which point the guard slow marched back inside to fix his kit while the sergeant walked the post. He came back a few minutes later, button fixed, and they went through the ritual again. I noticed a soldier wearing an Old Guard polo shirt, watching the process while holding a clip board. I wonder what he had to write about that one.

I’ve been to Arlington..winter...overcast...freezing...cold...damp...windy....chilled to the bone...and they were there guarding the tomb. Only about 6 of us watching the routine because of the conditions.
(kinja’d today... no matter how I’ve typed this or edited it the thing screwed up)

Cute, but not a pro-pro for Arlington.

Great photos! Great story. Check the YouTube video when you get the chance. Well worth the 14 minutes.

Ain’t nothing cute about the 101st Airborne. Their boots probably aren’t shiny though.

I watched it. Fewest badges second only to Army astronaut. There’s only 5 of those.
