I used to see a previous-gen 240D around in red all the time in lower east side

Probably been on the road constantly since new. Almost nothing today will age like this.

W 78th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus - there was a Citroen with a collapsed suspension there for years. Gone now - looked like this one (foreground):

Lunch at Eisenberg’s - 5th Ave in the 20s (egg creams and pastrami), Guggenheim, The Intrepid (we have a space shuttle that never went into space), Empire State Building if you haven’t done that, skip WTC, Central Park Zoo, also Imagine Circle (near where John Lennon was shot). Skip Times Square, skip the Christmas tree (it’s packed down there, I work near there, so I know).

Bought an ‘87 W124 300D new - but the W123 was the most bulletproof of them all ... you’re right. There’s nothing built today that would stand up long term like an old 300D or CD. Maybe a 240DL, but still not quite on par.

124s are almost as good, but need by-the-book maintenance, and some had quirks. I think 123s were also more rust-resistant.

Volvo bricks are the Swedish equivalent, but I’d take the 123 based on interior alone, something odd and harsh about some old Volvo plastics.

W124 had issues - mine had the trap oxidizer and turbo replaced for free (out of warranty) b/c MB knew the engine was badly designed. Replaced lots of window lifts (most under warranty) and various other bits. The thing is, owning a diesel Mercedes means reliable, but only the engine - the rest of the car isn’t diesel, it’s expensive parts that will fail, but Mercedes will always have the part. Go figure.

Yep I remember the emissions issues with those early engines, along with the 86-87 models having head issues. The 126s with that engine seem more common, and people know to beware. Window regulators are a classic old MB thing, even my fintail lost one.

I know the recent 4cyl Bluetec cars have proven very solid in Europe, and were sold here for a few years (I drive one). It might be the closest thing to a 123 since back in the day. They depreciate quite steeply, and might be a worthy buy for the right person.

Not sure where you are - don’t think we have 4 cylinder BlueTec here in US America ....

I am in the Seattle area. E250 was sold in NA for MY 2014-16, in RWD and 4Matic variants.

You could wait it out and probably have one for Corolla money ... I’d like that.

You can find 14s for around 30K already. There are definitely worse ways to spend the money.
