Now it’s time for us to feast on the list and see if they were right or wrong. A messy, controversial job, I know, but hey, Oppo’s comments section isn’t as bloody as YouTube’s, right? Right?

Oh, no...
*plop*
buh—By the way... Real Racing 3 deserves to be where it was ranked.

rFactor between Wipeout and Diddy Kong Racing... ok (in all fairness, rFactor in itself is not great... a small selection of mods on the other hand (C6 Corvette 3.2 I’m looking at you!) are just really good.
But so much configuration of FFB, pedals and so on is required for most sims that the average car reviewer will have no idea what he is doing. Not to mention that while simracing can teach A LOT, it takes quite a bit of time and understanding of how it works for people to be able to transfer their simracing skills into real life...
I wrote something specifically on the subject a while back: http://oppositelock.kinja.com/sim-racing-and-why-its-rarely-given-a-proper-chance-by-1526469391

TOCA being #38 is full on horse shit. That was like the first ‘hardcore’ sim with realistic damage. It’s why I’ll hate Alain Menu for my entire life.
Novices started with the Audi, because AWD launch, but once you got good at it you discovered that the car you really needed was the Nissan Primera...best brakes in the game by far, if you got to somebody’s bumper you could brake inside them every time.
And if you could win with Tim Harvey’s Peugeot 406, you were a straight up hero.

Your simracing history is a bit too “recent” I think haha. The first “true sim” would be “Indianapolis 500: the simulation” by Papyrus in 1989.

Real Racing 3 has too many microtransactions for my liking, it’s like you couldn’t get beyond the 2 “set” without paying some coin

And even a lot of sims that have predefined profiles need tons of tweaking to feel at all right.
I’m looking at you, DiRT Rally.
One shouldn’t have to tweak the steering angle settings, when it perfectly maps the Driving Force GT, so that it actually maps steering angle to force feedback angle properly.

I’ve yapped about this a billion times: Real Racing 3, as a $35 PC game, would be amazing.

Oh I played the hell out of that on an old Packard Bell. I always sucked in qualifying but raced well. Good call though, I had forgotten that game
NASCAR Racing 2 was excellent as well. Papyrus did a bunch of great stuff back then, I think they even did a SODA off road racing game.

I bet there’s a way to emulate it on PC

That’s not enough. Real Racing 3 has got to become its own title.

In terms of YHSIAA (youth hours spent in an arcade), Super Offroad, Pole Position, Spy Hunter, are probably my top 3. Ha.

Besides Real Racing 3, the only game on that list I’ve played was Hard Driving.
Real Racing got progressively worse with each update until I finally quit. I think what did it for me was when the progression became a linear path as opposed to cars unlocking different trees.
