I was in Puerto Rico just two weeks ago (for the first time) and that was a very interesting place for cars.

Wide amount of diversity in such a small area.

And so many different types of license plates!!

A few not so exciting cars too that seemed unique to the Puerto Rican market - kinda like this unicorn you found... but probably factory stock XD

AND SUCH TERRIBLE DRIVING. Holy crap I had some tense moments. I took some more photos to share once I’m caught up with work but who am I kidding, I haven’t been caught up in 9 years.

Seriously though, I might buy a Tercel. They look really cool if modified right.

Surprising. I would have expected a rotary.

I have one of the Zoidberg variety. Very different image. I actually deliberated quite a bit while stuck behind this guy on whether adding a turbo badge to mine would be like the oppo sticker +5 hp or whether the extra weight would cancel out any ironic benefits.

Sounds like you’re not from Puerto Rico either then...

Completely agree there. Besides the roads generally being a mess and simply not wide enough for two cars out in the country, drivers were crazy. Not fast, just crazy. Those two-way but shouldn’t be two-way streets were the scariest driving moments for me.

You must have noticed too... Turn signals weren’t even optional - they were just NEVER used. Ever.

Yeah I’m not from there. Had to travel for work and stayed for the weekend.

Combine their crazy with google’s complete non-understanding of how one-way streets work and it was a stressful few days of sight-seeing. Not that the natives care which one way the street is supposed to be going. I decided to drive from Arecibo to Ponce the long way, to stay on larger roads, and still got totally lost somewhere in the middle of the island. But good god was it beautiful when you had a chance to look up from the roads.

I know they want statehood but they don’t even have the money to make their roads meet national standards, much less everything else that would entail. I’ve been doing some fascinating reading on the economic states of the US unincorporated territories since I got back though. Just something that had never even occurred to me to wonder about.

I only did some very light background reading before going... Enough to realize Puerto Rico, if a state, would be the poorest in the country. Didn’t want to go in with any false expectations.

But like anywhere, you’ll find your GTR, Ferrari 458, etc outliers. And the Mall of San Juan which is huge, beautiful, and far more upscale than any shopping center I’ve ever seen in the northeast.
