That’s mine in case you were wondering, you can’t see but it’s covered in scuffs and small bits of surface rust. Not to mention I think the derailleur is shot. And I need a new chain...

hate to tell you this, but if u need a new chain, chances are you need all new gears as well. as the chain wears so do the gear teeth, when u put the new chain on, it wont sit correctly between teeth and will slip.

It may not be so bad. Although it looks in rough shape, it doesn’t look like a high-mileage bike. It’s likely that the chain just rusted from sitting outside and didn’t see much action. I’d put on an inexpensive chain to see how it goes before buying a new cluster.

Old bikes are loads of fun to work on. Being steel, that bike is easy to strip to bare metal and repaint. You can make it look as nice as you want!

Yes, that’s exactly what happened it languished on my uncle’s porch for about 3 months

I want to keep the decals intact unless I can find reproductions or similar ones

You may be able to get repros or originals directly from the manufacturer.

Before you do anything, figure out whether or not you can get decals. You might be able to get someone to make new ones off of pictures.
You can still repaint it without destroying the original decals, but it’s going to be a lot more work. You will have to mask them off and paint around them. A final coat of clear over the whole bike (decals and new paint) will help preserve them
Or you could just sand out the rust spots and spot paint it. You’ll have to take it to an automotive shop to get the color matched.
A friend of mine started down this road, but decided that it would be too much trouble, so he had his GT powder-coated. They stripped and powdered the whole thing for $100.
The downside to powder is the need to reface all of the mating surfaces. The bottom bracket, the headset, the wheels, the derailleur mount, etc. all need smooth surfaces for proper parts alignment.
If you go with paint, it’s really easy to just strip the whole frame with a drill-mounted wire brush. Follow up with a decent spray paint and you are done!
Here’s one of my repaints for inspiration:
It’s a steel-framed Schwinn from 1976, converted to a flat-bar single-speed in this picture. It now sports drop bars, a set of brifters, and 8 speeds out back.

if thats the case, couldn;t just cleaning up the chain and lubing it work? When I replaced my chain, it was due to high mileage.

It’s really hard to clear up a rusty chain. I’ve heard of guys soaking them in motor oil, but I don’t think it’s worth the risk. Chain “stretch” is due to the pins and rollers wearing out. This happens a lot faster with a rusty chain since the rust acts as an abrasive between the pins and rollers. Once the chain stretches, it starts wearing on the gear teeth. Then you end up replacing all of the components - chain, front rings, and the cassette or freewheel, depending on what it has out back.
In his case, it looks like the teeth aren’t worn much at all. I’d put a new chain on and see how it performs before I’d go to the extra expense of a full drivetrain replacement.

heck, they don’t have em
Hi, there!
We do not have decals or frame stickers available outside of the factories where they are applied. This is due to the high and rising amount of counterfeit Specialized bikes coming into the market as well as the fact that most decals have to be baked and painted on in a manner only possible in our factories.
Thanks for using our products! Have a great day!

Bummer. That limits your options. It’s either protect them or pay someone to make new ones for you. If you have access to a vinyl cutter, you could make some of your own.
