It’s been six years since I saw the car, and it was just in for a rear bumper scratch repair and repaint. First thing on a Monday morning, first day back from a couple months overseas, helped a buddy pull the rear cover off, and there’s a turbo in my face.
Sound, from what I recall, wasn’t much different. It was a 6 cylinder car (02ish, I think), and sounded like a 6 cylinder car from the front. You could hear the turbo from the back, but we had no reason to wind it up, and I couldn’t really justify a test drive for a bumper repair (much to my dismay).

Rear mounted turbos are pretty popular among drag racers. Easy to fit and the lag penalty doesn’t really matter

Wasn’t this also some kind of legality thing? If it’s located outside the engine compartment, it isn’t an engine/emission related thing according to some states?

That doesn’t look very efficient.

That’s gotta be an expensive rear-end repair. Fender bender = new turbo.
But then on the other hand, Mustangs only get into front-end accidents mostly.
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

Like I always say “ who needs a muffler when you’ve got a turbo?”

Wow, that’s one of the old STS rear mount turbo kits. Those were popular for a few years, they were on a few local trucks, and then the market crash happened. I knew a few people who had them. The claimed benefit was you didn’t need an intercooler, because the piping from the back bumper up to the engine compartment would cool it like an intercooler.

Usually it’s a space thing. They do this on dodge magnums because they don’t fit in the engine bay.

doesn’t Kia or Genesis have a rear mounted turbo on one of their models?

I remember seeing some projects like this before. Heard one say it eliminated the need for an intercooler as well. (~10 ft of metal tube sheds heat pretty well)
