Nice!

The managing director of my division recently ordered an M4 GTS, but it’s currently sitting at a port in Germany.

You’ll have to let oppo know how it is, I’m about curious about the electric power steering. It really wasn’t bad in the F10 M5 I test drove, but it’s kinda numb/dull in the F30/32.

Definitely will. I do know over the F30/32 it is improved as my F82 was quite better than the standard 3/4 series. Seems like folks like the feedback better in the F87 than the F82.

Was your M4 leased? I got my E90 in 2014, when the F82 wasn’t really in dealers yet. I got tired of waiting for an M3, so I just got a used one. I have yet to drive a new M3/M4, I might have gotten one if oil hadn’t taken a shit in Nov. of 14.

Nope, I bought it. With interest rates so low (1.24% @ the time), the economics of leasing just weren’t justifiable for me. Following gut instinct I sold the car in Summer of ‘15, just in time for the market to crash.

I had forgotten the oil market was back up to like $60 in summer 2015, I was at one of companies schools for field engineers in Tulsa during that. I paid off my M3 shortly after that. I got laid off in April of 2016, I was happy I didn’t have to ditch the M3.

The F10 M5 is hydraulic. They developed it only for the M5. The last gasp from M before they succumbed to “wider audience” mediocrity.

You’re right, I always assumed that it was electric like the rest of the F10 5 series

Surprisingly little known fact, and that very fact probably was enough to convince the bean counters it wasn’t worth the budget. It’s annoying though because they should have saved that budget for the M3/4. The M5 is a damn boat now (even at over 6'4" I think it’s too huge) and more and more of a Mercedes than anything where most buyers could care less about steering feel, they want power and to be cocooned. Putting that budget to the much more appropriate M3/4 (and therefore able to trickle down to the M2) would have single handedly shot reviews for the F8X way higher. The hallmark of BMW’s (like our E9X’s) is the communication through the steering alongside the chassis. They’ve now abandoned that very thing that made them different and now they’re just slightly less beige to me than an Audi or Mercedes... Granted the least beige car is still the best choice. I just REALLY hope the G2X rights the ship.

I wasn’t really serious about the F10 M5 so I didn’t really do any research, I just wanted to drive one. They had one at the carmax near me, so I went to drive it. I also wanted to see what I thought of the DCT; my dad has a 135is with the DCT but I wanted to try an M car out with one.

I came away impressed with the steering, assuming it was electric, but now I learn it’s hydraulic, it makes sense. It was also fast; I guess all that low down torque will do that. It needed a third pedal though, and why the hell do you need to pump engine noise in?

I agree they should have put the hydraulic steering in the M3/4 and waited until electric steering becomes better. BMW M does have a history of this, the used hydraulic steering in the Z4 even thought the normal Z4 went to electric. I spent 9 hours driving a rental Hyundai Sonata from metro Atlanta to Savannah and back on Thursday for an interview, and I was appalled by the steering. On the highway it was so twitchy, too light, and numb. The slightest movement of the wheel would have the car darting to the left or the right. I don’t know how people tolerate it. It’s not even about steering feel or anything, it was just way too sensitive. It can be numb, but at least make it so it’s weighted, pretty sure an ant could steer that car as light as the steering was.

One of the reasons I got my E90 over and F82 was I was worried about the electric power steering, and well it was 2014 and I got tired of waiting for an M3. Knowing what I do now, I think I made the right choice.

Yeah you definitely made the right choice. I truly think the F3X/F8X will be the E21 of this current era. The E21 was faster than a 2002, sure, but no one wants or remembers them and they are mostly forgotten.

I love my E9X and do not plan on selling it. I’ve debated over and over whether to and get an E9X M3, but I love my 335is, it will be paid off in less than a year, and it’s got the torque to make a commute of straight roads lots of fun while still making corners a blast. Now it’s got Turner aluminum / delrin RSFB’s and a Quaife. I like that it’s rare and understated and I’ll do top level stuff to keep it fresh.

Granted I admit I want something pure sporting to go alongside like it at some point, but I’ll be content with her and the GTI for now.

I thought about saving money and getting an E9X 335i, but I had the funds and always wanted the M car, so that’s what I got. I’ve had mine paid off for a year, which is really nice, considering I lost my job. I will admit, if the 335is is anything like a 135is, I bet it’s also a blast to drive. They’re starting to fall into the 25k range, so I might look at one as a second car when I have another job. Not sure I really want to DD my M3, and I have a thing for BMWs.
