I have declared 2017 to be the year of my life when I get a new(er) motorcycle. I’ve been riding around on my old 1985 nighthawk 650. It’s a great bike, but it’s an old bike so every 500-1000 miles I replace a thing. Nothing bad, nothing awful, I’m just a little tired of it and want something more capable. I’m leaning very heavily towards a KLR 650. But the honda NC700X, CTX700, CB500X, and possibly a Vstrom 650 are on my list.

For most of these bikes it’s about ratcheting up the mileage. All of them will gobble up a hundred miles in an afternoon and go “Mmmm, that was lovely. Care for more?”. Buuuuuuuut.....KLR means dirt trails. And I think it’s the only one capable of doing more than just a dirt fire road. But am I wrong?

Does anyone know if the NC700X or the V-strom 650 or the like can be off-road capable with some new suspension or something?

KLR is going to be the most trail worthy of those bikes you mentioned. And they’re great bikes (not the fastest) but they’ll get you where you want to go... I had an ‘89 klr that I bought for $600 and put 20k miles without a single issue... And mechanically, brand new klr’s are no different than the one I had....

I wouldn’t consider the Wee-Strom as capable a dual sport as the KLR or some others, but more capable than other choices. What kind of riding do you do, or intend to do? If the dirt calls to you, the KLR is your best choice. If you’re mainly a street rider, not so much (though you could go super moto with street tires on the KLR). The Wee-Strom would be a good mostly street bike that could tackle the occasional dirt.

I feel like I would seek out the dirt if I got the KLR but I’d hit the side roads with the rest for leisure riding. Not interested in attacking curves yet. I like the riding position and seats of these bikes.

I sat on a late 2000s one that my local dealership had in the used lot. 2000$ and it only had like 3 or 4000 miles on it......it was VERY tempting. I will ride whatever and wherever, I guess I’m concerned about what I’d be giving up if I don’t get the KLR but at the same time I wouldn’t ride the KLR on the freeway unless I had street tires to swap on. And even then, I’d rather get the NC700X or the CTX700 if I was to do highway riding since both of those are designed to do almost 70mpg at 70mph for hour after hour....but cruising the ORV trails in the KLR is so tempting too. I can’t jump and yump like the motocross bikes but then again I could ride to the trail and ride home on the KLR.

You cannot go wrong with a KLR with only 3-4K miles for $2000. And a KLR is fine on a highway... It’s getting close to running out of breath, but I’ve crusied on highways at 90 mph no problem...

Or, you could get a new Aprilia with an obnoxiously loud exhaust. It won’t off-road, but it will do everything else better than any of the options you mentioned. Now is the time to buy a leftover ‘16 model for relatively cheap.

Do it.

No. It looks dumb. It also looks like a chiropractor’s wet dream for a client base. It isn’t me. Not at all. The highest performance bikes I want are either the VFR800, the ducati monster, or a BMW F800ST
