Probably my two biggest interests are cars and hiking. So naturally, I always enjoy when the two come together. The past couple of years, I’ve been following tips on where to find cars on the trails around DC. I’m still following up on a few leads, but I’ve found quite a few over the past couple of years.

Wait; do you hike barefoot as well?
Also there’s a surprising number of trashed/wrecked cars in the mojave desert area

Makes you wonder what their backstories are. How did they come to rest there? What happened to the drivers? I bet there are some interesting adventures associated with them.

I know the backstories to a few. The cars in Daniels, MD were deposited there by floodwaters during Hurricane Agnes in 1972 (which completely destroyed the entire town of Daniels). The cars in Joshua Tree were work trucks at the Wall Street Gold Mill, and were simply left behind when the mill was abandoned. As for the others, I have no idea.

I found some VW remains (I think) in Springfield/Burke, near South Run Rec Center. It’s not much, but definitely some frame rails! :D
