That’s how long it took me to get home from work... As someone who was born and raised in Minnesota, I gotta say: get your shit together, Portland. One point seven inches... *facepalm*
Pictured: My max speed.

So weird. I’ve lived north of Seattle my whole life, and even I have driven through enough snow storms to get around — and to assess when to stay home.
Six years ago when we over a foot, people largely did fine, the usual assholes in full SUVs and trucks going 60mph slide off the interstate, but I even got to work in my pickup with some junk in the bed to weigh down the rear. However, I don’t think that would be the case today. Traffic is significantly worse since then, lots of people that are flocking here are from places — and sometimes countries — that do not get snow. Add that to all the locals who drive impaired to begin with, and you got chaos I assume.

That, and PDXers are stingy with their weather cancellations. Last week, everyone freaked out and they closed the city down for a full day for a not so bad snow. This week, no one closed anything until the snow started... Then everyone cancelled everything at exactly the same time.

How long is your commute normally?

Yeah, I left at around 2 and my commute doubled. Plus I very VERY nearly got the e39 stuck, thank god for a decent traction control system.

Upper Midwest logic doesn’t even apply to the Upper Midwest anymore.
It doesn’t help that some Weather folks go into so much detail that you don’t know if you even got a forecast. (Yeah! I’m looking at you, Tom Skilling!)

Yeah. I left downtown at 8:45pm, trying to wait for traffic to die down, still took an hour to get home. No freeways on my commute. Normally takes 10-15 minutes. What a joke.
I’m also from Minnesota, where this cute little snowfall wouldn’t even be a blip on the bad weather radar.
Portland’s reaction to this was the polar opposite to last week. I don’t understand how it can be so fucked.

I feel for you man...Washington DC is the same way. God forbid there’s 1-2" of snow during rush hour. It will turn the beltway into a snowy apocalypse scene of wrecked cars, people driving sideways, and hours of sitting in bumper to bumper traffic. It’s crazy.

I was visiting my soon-to-be-wife in Seattle when you guys got a foot of snow. I remember asking for a snow shovel to do the walkway, and apparently that’s not a thing in Seattle like it is in RI, so I had to shovel the walkway with a spade.
Also, dudes in huge 4x4s were driving around with chains on their tires for what was 4 inches at the time. As a New Englander, I found that kinda hilarious.

He’s in Portland, not Phoenix.

I left work at the airport at 2:31 and pulled into my driveway in OC at 7:41. Thank God for a full 42 gallon gas tank. I could have slept in my car with the heater on for a few days!
Schools wouldn’t have even been 2 hrs late for 1.7 inches...

It’s perplexing that such a small amount of snow could mess everything up so bad.
