Kinja dont flip the photo.
Anyways, mom won this at a party. She doesnt want it, is giving it to me.
A: is it any good?
B: any guides/tutorials/walk throughs on how to use these?
Parents won this at a christmas party. Trying to figure out if I should keep it and try my hand at photography, or sell it for bike parts.

It’s a pretty solid mid-range SLR with a relatively crappy zoom lens that will still be a major upgrade over any phone camera.
Personally I moved away from SLRs to mirrorless because I wear glasses and with an SLR I was always smushing my face up to the viewfinder which kinda sucks when you wear glasses. Mirrorless is better if you want to shoot using the screen like a point-n-shoot or phone.
For starters you can put it in auto mode and it’ll do pretty good. But there are plenty of manual settings. Here’s a list of different intro to photography things that should be a good starting point.

sure, the D5300 is a fine little camera. The AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55 f:3.5-5.6G VR II is a cheap-ass lens, but it has pretty OK Optics considering, it’s is built like a cheap plastic toy though, and better can certainly be had. Is this a gift or a freebie? This set can be had new for about $550.

It’s fine to learn on and the price is right.
What do you want to take pictures of?

Try your hand at learning photography. If it doesn’t work out, then you can sell it.

Nikons suck ass (as products, as cameras idk I’m not a pro), I say sell it and get a canon instead. Very satisfied with my sam’s club rebel.

Sitting still will be fine, you are going to run out of glass if you are trying to take track shots etc..
Portrait mode will give you the depth of focus for bike sitting at the side of the road kind of shots- action/kid mode for driving shots with movement.
Take a bunch of photos and see how you like it.
Don’t worry about Nikon/Canon/ etc arguments, they are older than the hills and not really all that important anymore.

90% of the pictures I take are with that lens. It’s not great but it’s very decent

$850.00 (CAD). Mrs. says yes it is decent. She sells this stuff, so she knows what she is on about I think.

Yes, yes it is. We have a D3300, and it’s fantastic.
