A 3-door Golf GTI would be a tempting offer. Manual, plaid seats (PLAID!), what more could a man want?
I suppose I wouldn’t like paying for premium fuel, the price tag, and perhaps some of the maintenance. But I’m sure it would be a hoot.

You sold me at Plaid. I love how VW still has it and hope they always will. Fuel? Meh. It’s worth it if you drive what you like. What’s that saying? Fast, reliable or cheap?

I came very close to buying a newish Mark 4 GTI long ago, then came very close to buying a Mark 6 when they debuted... I’ve since gotten over my horrible addiction to Volkswagens and cars with monthly payments.

The only problem is GTIs aren’t fast. They are cheap used though.

“Fast” is a relative term.
I’m used to (and prefer) cars that were built when 225hp from a 5.0 in a 3200lb car was a Hallelujah moment.

They are very fun cars. I have a mk7 GTI and it’s a solid car. Can get 40 mpg on the highway when cruising but can be a hoot to drive when you feel like it. I have an S so plaid (win) with the performance and lighting package. Besides my E30 it has provided the most fun out of any vehicle I have owned.

What would be your preferred fast car then?

Agreed. I just pay the monthly repair bills now.

I used to own a Mk2 (stolen, never recovered) and the yearning for another one never stops. It would need different wheels, however. I don’t think I’ve liked any of the GTI wheels in a decade.

Well in the plus side this is the last year for them so won’t have to worry about being tempted by a brand new one. From 2017 on it is 5-door only.

I don’t have one preferred fast car, but I wouldn’t consider a GTI a fast car. I do like GTIs, and was considering buy one a year or so ago. The GTI is a zippy car, get it up to 300 hp if you want a quick car, but you need at least 4-500 hp in a 3k lb car for it to be fast.

You could buy multiple Tercels a year for what it would cost to keep it on the road ... but PLAID!

I know I’ve said this before, but the first manufacturer to grow the balls to sell a new full size truck, with two plaid bench seats gets my money.

A hoot for sure, and if you do as little as breathe on these engines horsepower levels can get to ridiculous levels.

When are you taking it to APR for a software tune?

Don’t have any plans of doing an Apr tune. Warranty is still intact and I don’t plan on voiding that just yet. Might do a jb1 though.

From what I’ve seen, there are VW dealerships that will install the APR tune at the dealership, keeping the warranty intact.

Right on, I like your thought process. I’ve been considering a used Porsche Cayman S since I’ve gotten a raise, and have been saving some money for a while now.
