Looking through a gigapixel photo of Toronto when...
Um. Either way there’s 4 morons in here.

So a good day in Toronto traffic. In Toronto nobody follows the rules, to get anywhere fast-ish you have to break the rules.

Gigapixel photos are a collection of smaller photos stitched together (aka mosaicked). The two (or more) photos covering this scene were taken under different traffic light conditions.

Yup. Lights are green, the silver compact, gold Lincoln, white van, probably the black car turning right, and countless pedestrians are likely in the wrong.

More than 4. I’m including all the people walking in front of a green light.

I’m more interested in how at least 4 people could be simultaneously oblivious. Possibly all 8. I mean, there’s only 2 possible scenarios:
1. The east-west cars (including the one turning) all decided at the same time to run the red. Light has just become green and they are caught in the middle.
2. Southbound cars jumped the green. The eastbound Civic may have got in under the yellow, but the three westbound vehicles must have entered under the red or they’d be further along.

A weird day for Toronto traffic. Usually (personal observation, ymmv) Toronto is overly sedate to the point where those inclined to be aggressive go over the top to get by, resulting in masses of slow-moving vehicles with one, maybe two aggressive outliers in a situation the size of this intersection. Here we have (best case) four people being stupidly aggressive. I’d be inclined to say 7 or 8—based on the fact that the northbound light is green and nobody has moved (normal Tdot stuff) I’d say it’s just turned and the southbound cars jumped the green.
I. Can’t. Even.

True enough, but it must be VERY well stitched. I can’t make out any seams. Besides that, It’s just too perfect for that to be the case as far as I can tell. Despite my response to The Crazie Kanuck, I find it much more believable that this many Toronto drivers suddenly went (extra) stupid than that this is stitched. (look at the pedestrians for clues too) See below for the seams that would be necessary:
Assuming EVERYONE is playing by the rules of course. Under the circumstances I find it odd nothing is cut off or stretched, ignoring the angles that would be needed for this segment to be stitched.

I hadn’t thought about the pedestrians. Knowing the average T.O. pedestrian, they seem to confirm things. This *could* be partly the point where two pictures join, but the overall geometry of the situation makes it seem unlikely to me. That said, even if it is, there are more than a few morons in here.

Haha this is funny, but the explanation is that this is most likely a mosaic of high res photos.

I’m just going to leave this here, because it’s a good point. That said, read my counterpoint too. Any way it’s sliced I see many morons.

It’s a good point, and has already been made, but read my counterpoint.
To that I’d like to add:
- No matter how it came about, there are idiots in this pic.
- This area is small enough to fall within one photo.
To me it all adds up to idiot T.O. drivers and average T.O. pedestrians. The concentration of drivers is perhaps unusual, but possible. The concentration of pedestrians is... well... the U of T is very close. Take from that what you will. I find college/university students to be the dumbest of pedestrians. In other words... at least a good chunk of this is genuine.

When I go in to Toronto, maybe 2-3 times a year. I have to drive like an asshole to get anywhere, I don’t like driving that way.

In Toronto you either drive hard or you get nowhere.
And sometimes both.

That’s Dundas and University. It’s a 2-stage crossing that pedestrians ALWAYS try to do in one go and never make it. Sigh.

Given the position of the moving elements (both people and cars), the abundance of available stitch lines, the fact that we know that this is a mosaic of photos, and the (probable) close timing of the two (or more) photos, and I can’t go with any other explanation than stitched. Occam’s razor and all.
Besides, you aren’t even sketching in the best stitch lines! If you use the edge between the shiny and matte pavements, the vertical crosswalk, and the outline of the car that crosses the shiny/matte pavement border, it would be easy to stitch these together.

I dunno. Still not convinced. Frankly I’d like to believe that... but there just seem to be too many other things that lean towards a genuine photo. The fact that it’s a small enough area and the pedestrian behavior, to name a couple. I’m going to zoom in a little further for another example...
The pedestrians at the bottom and top don’t agree with the light, but that means jack sh*t in Toronto, especially near the UofT. Everyone chases the lights. (See Cletus’s comment) Therefore we can ignore them for the time being at least. Now the cars in orange also appear to contradict the situation, in that they aren’t in the right lane but they are just barely past the intersection, as if they’ve just come straight through. Therefore they line up with the green light but not the cross traffic behind them. However, people here often swing waaaaaayy further than they should on right turns. In fact, you can see the car in yellow about to do exactly that, on a path that could take it to any of the position of the three cars in orange. Therefore, the northbound cars *could* have made right turns. Now the cars going east-west seem to line up with the behavior of the pedestrian waiting. But... the pedestrian signal in blue is showing “walk”. The pedestrian signal, then, agrees with the green light, yet the pedestrians have not started crossing. The logical jump, then, is that the light has only just turned--a conclusion that is supported by the pedestrians crossing east-west and by the cars waiting at the light--and also makes it impossible for the cars to the north to have passed straight through the light. Now, assuming it’s a mosaic, there must be joints. Specifically, the joint must occur between the black car exiting the intersection to the north and the crosswalk. The easiest place to hide the joint would be down the line of the crosswalk, but that is made impossible because it passes through several moving objects, yet there is neither stretching nor chopping. Assuming the joint could be disguised effectively if it took another path, it still must pass through moving objects. All in all, I believe that this half at least is genuine.
Odds are the truth lies somewhere in the middle, but either way there’s a hell of a lot of coincidence and idiots.

I’ve driven downtown many times. Toronto traffic isn’t bad compared to many places that are truly insane... like Rome, Italy.

My picture imports keep getting kinjad.
Let’s call the top of the image “north.” Imagine a cut line which starts along the north curb of the east/west street. Extend it along the north side of the car turning right up to and along the north crosswalk boundary. It would have to make a little jog up and over the pedestrian, but could continue west to the median curb and follow it around to the north/south crosswalk between the medians. Follow the west side crosswalk boundary south to the south boundary between the concrete of the tracks and the darker asphalt. Follow that boundary west to the building balcony.
South of this cut line, the image was captured when the light was green for east/westbound traffic across the image. That explains the brake lights, the pedestrians, the cross traffic, and the black car turning right. Above the line, the signals for the north/southbound traffic flow was green (as seen in the lights in the image). This explains the northbound traffic past the intersection and the southbound traffic proceeding into the intersection. If you blacked out either above or below the highlighted line, either scene would seem pretty normal.

Here’s the thing that is sticking out to me:
That pedestrian has just crossed and must therefore be part of the lower image. Yet, the pedestrian signal shows “walk” and must therefore be part of the green light image. The line must therefore jog around the pedestrian because it mush be high enough to go between the pedestrian and the car I called out in the other image. Now you would know more than me, but would the people who put this together take the time to cut around everything like that? Bearing in mind that there’s quite a lot of stitching to do, I’d say they’d stick to straight joints.
To my mind this is a more likely stitch:
Split down the middle. Red light runners and late pedestrians on one side with the cars coming from the right turn, pedestrians crossing on the other. Bear in mind this seems perfectly plausible to me based on local knowledge.

People become stupid when they start walking, myself included. One of the biggest dangers of riding a bike on the sidewalk is the unpredictable movements of pedestrians. I say this to point out that the pedestrian in question may have forgotten his lunch, or just ran across the road, or spotted a squirrel. There’s just no predicting how pedestrians move.
I stand by my stitch line. I’ve seen lots of mosaics with this level of effort just for aerial photography. Given that most of these mega mosaics are art pieces, I have no doubt they went to a great deal of effort making sure the stitching is clean. I think of it as a real-life Where’s Waldo drawing.
I can’t agree with the vertical split. I’ve seen people do dumb things when crossing the street during my time in New York, but it’s usually one or two, not a whole gaggle of them crossing against the light at once.

University students, Toronto Canada. ‘Nuff said afaic. That pedestrians can be so stupid is amazing. To me it’s not beyond belief that they could all be so dumb.
But, if you have experience and you say that that’s the level of effort put in... I concede.
