Kinja'd!!!

Remember that bike I was repainting? Well I picked it up again. Mainly because I was stressed and needed something to do. I think it may end up red. Also I broke a sander. That’s all I guess. I still want the paint off.

Sand blaster? Sand blaster. Just plug the bottom bracket and head tube so you don’t booger the threads.

Learned this lesson while doing wheels...

Hours and hours of sandpaper, wire wheels, and flap discs.. vs. 10 minutes with a sandblaster.

It’s amazing how well chemicals you can get cheaply at Home Depot or Auto Zone work on projects like this.

I have “repainted” more than a few frames. Usually by chemically stripping them and then getting them powdercoated.

Paint stripper gel and steel wool. There’s 1/4 an aisle at Home Depot dedicated to the stuff, buy based on what’s on the frame currently and be sure to get it all off before you paint it again.

Don’t bother sanding. Chem strip it with Martin SR 6802 (From NAPA) or Aircraft stripper (also NAPA). WEAR GLOVES. Note that it is temperature sensitive and will work slower in cold weather. Use a scouring pad from the dishwashing section of a supermarket that looks like this:

Then “clean off” the rest with 80 grit paper. Follow it up with 180. Prime, paint.

I have stripped several frames with a drill-mounted wire wheel. You can find one at Walmart. I wouldn’t use it on aluminum, but it works great for steel frames.

Thanks but I think this is an aluminum frame

The tube dimensions don’t look like it’s aluminum. Do the magnet test. If it sticks, the frame is steel.

Is steel

There you go! A wire wheel will make short work of stripping the paint without chemicals.
