Let’s talk about maintaining a car you cannot drive.
A lovely machine.
I have had my boxster for a while and am very happy with it but in the past week I have a had a problem/opportunity with a 997 Turbo S. Without giving too many details a somewhat distant relative of mine passed away this week and left behind several houses and vehicles in various states of disrepair. The only one that concerns me is a 997 Turbo S. It is not properly plated and we have not found the keys yet; so we cannot really drive it yet. Currently it is sitting in the driveway.
I believe it is a 2008 to 2012 model but cannot be sure.(Update: found the VIN. It is a 2011.)
My boxster lurking in the background.
The estate is far from settled and I am concerned that it will develop problems if left to sit while we figure things out. I can assume it will need a new battery but once we find the keys I would like to prevent any new issues from developing. It will be awhile before we can get new plates and insurance. So, any suggestions on keeping it in good condition while not being able to actually drive it?
Thanks,
Afca

I’d start by putting a car cover on it, do that at least

That is a good idea. Another family member lives 500m away so we may move it there. Unfortunately he only has a carport not a garage so a cover would still be good.

You can’t run the vin to find out the specifics on the car?

Can you take it?

If you want to figure out the year, check the 10th digit in the VIN, that will tell you the year. wbaup7c59 c vp23007 That’s the VIN for the 128i I had, the “C” corresponds to a 2012.

If the keys can be found, maybe not be a bad idea to get a battery tender if it’s going to be sitting up for a while.

No keys, no documents, and the plate on it is for a different car. Big old mess.

The VIN is at the base of the windshield.

No keys found yet. But if we move it to another family member’s house we will do that. I don’t think he drove it much so a new battery will probably needed anyway.

Not yet, we cannot find the keys.

Great tip! I honestly did not know that (never need to know the VIN of a locked car). I will go back in a few days and check. Thanks!

Keep the tires inflated, a battery tender is good. Not much you can do without running it. I would change the oil once you get a key though if it’s been sitting.

It will be in a little window at the bottom of the windshield on the drivers side. They are required to be mounted to the body of the car and externally visible.

No keys, no data, mismatched plate, on a later model 911 Turbo? There’s gotta be an interesting story behind this, no mafia or ties that AML people would be interested in, right? :)
Tow it to a garage and cover it at the very least.

I will be back in a few days to get a cover for it. Nothing untoward going on, just a sad story about the end of a family line.

Sounds like you had an interesting distant relative.

a red porchse is a red porsche to most people. throw your plates on and just do a few laps of the neighbourhood occasionally.
sorry for your loss, i hope it all works out.

If you can get it running, change the oil, put some fuel stabilizer in, fill the tank, keep it on a trickle charger and keep it covered. Starting it up and letting it warm up to operating temperature atleast a couple times a month would be the best thing you could do for it

Actually for a long time I thought that he also had a boxster because everyone said mine was ‘just like his’. Not quite.

That is an accurate statement.

Based on the taillights, it’s a 997.2, so likely a 2011 or 2012 for the Turbo S.

Make sure that once you find the keys you use both fobs (assuming it came with two) to lock & unlock it from time to time. If you go too long without using one of them, the fob will automatically disable itself. The only option at that point is to get the fob reprogrammed by Porsche for something like $250. Guess how I learned that lesson.

Fair question. Turns out there was even more drama and confusion. The estate is not yet settled. When it is I will post what I can about the experience.
