The Twingo is pretty appalling at motorway work and I do 50 miles on high speed roads every day. So I started thinking about what i’d want to replace it with. It would have to be interesting. Itd have to get better fuel economy at a high speed cruise while also being quieter and having a nice interior. Plus itd have to be as inexpensive as the Twingo to buy and be able to tow. X Type fits the bill quite nicely. They use mondeo diesel engines which I know well and can get parts for cheaply, the interior is excellent for the money and fuel economy on the motorway is pretty good.
Anything I’m missing?

erm...
*scratches head*
you do know there is a reason those things are so cheap right?

What reason is that? Reliability seems reasonable. The only reason I can see is personal taste.

Try and get a 2.2 rather than a 2 litre, the latter is a bit gutless.

mechanically reliable maybe...electronic on the other hand...oh boy.
plus the added cost of JAAAGGGG parts when something breaks

Electronics haven’t been a problem in british cars since the 80s. there are plenty of other reasons to hate the x type.

Generally I like Jaags better than BMWs, but I think if you’re going X-type, any comparable BMW will be better.

An X-Type isn’t a bad idea.

Would be sad to see the Twingo go(making me the only Twingbro on Oppo), but on the other hand I’ve always liked the X type (and S type). Wouldn’t a Mondeo be cheaper though?

Yeah that would be the plan but I’m okay with the 2 litre if I find a nice example. Ive personally owned a car with a variant of the 2 litre, as has my grandad and they were fine if not quick.

Ive looked into it and the aftermarket has basically every part that could wear out for a good price, with breakers yards being the place to go for anything else.
Plus on the point of electrical issues, we own three Renaults which are always mocked for perceived electrical unreliability. All completely fine.

Price comes into play here though. An 80k mile e46 320d with a nice spec is much more than an X type. Plus the e46 interior isnt to my tastes at all.

Mondeos are barely cheaper for the spec I’d want (Ghia or Titanium). If I do replace the Twingo I’d want a nicer interior than a normal spec Mondeo. X Types are very very cheap in the UK.

Really? here in the US the x type is on par with the e46 in both build quality and price, but I’d say the e46 is a much better drive. I’d rather have a nice e39 than either.

Ye’, the Jaguar X-Type is a good looking car, sort of like a baby XJ.

In that case I get the choice for the X type. And saying you drive a Jaaaag is way better than saying you drive a Ford.
For fun I just checked, here in the Netherlands X types are extremely cheap too, however still €1000-ish more expensive than a similar condition Mondeo of similar age.

Good diesel e46s are worth a good few quid more than a similar X Type yeah, petrol ones cost pennies because most cant afford the running costs.

Yes this is a brilliant idea :) X-Types are great value for what you get
If you’re feeling like you want to venture into a little speed-making, there’s a czech chap that does re-maps of those 2.2TD engines (in Peugeots, but it’s the same one) which make them pretty meaty and rev very cleanly compared to a stock one :) cheap too, for a remap

Interesting, here theyre pretty similar. I actually used to own a Mondeo and it was decent but a bit too heavy (it was a mk4) and the interior was somewhat disappointing since it was only a Zetec.

Interesting, but makes sense as we didn’t get any diesel BMWs until the newer generations.

Interesting, I’ll let you know if I decide to get one and look into that. I’ll have to wait a little while for finances to get better before making any purchases.

It’s not like this is an XJ-S. It’s a fawhncy mondeo. Parts won’t be too bad to sneak around.

1. Styling
2. Posh version of a relatively bland mid-size car (in this case the Fiat Marea/ Alfa 156)
3. Dirt cheap.

An odd thing I always found with the Jaguar X-type. Jaguar has always been known as a brand of style, and great performance. Yet in this generation, the entry-level X-type engine was a 155 HP 2.1 L V6. I mean, who the hell wants a 155 HP small displacement engine in a 3,600 lbs car? A freaking Chevrolet Malibu has more horsepower! You are going to be passed by cyclists on the highway. The only real demographic I could see choosing that engine is (maybe) extremely old people, 75 yrs and older, because they don’t pass 100 kph (62 mph) anyway. But even if I was 75 or 80, I want something peppy!

I would recommend it, but a nice 2.2 X-type diesel isn’t very far off from, say, this .

I suppose, eh? I always thought Jaguars were meant to be peppy or sporty. So you can understand my surprise when a base engine is that under-powered. What can you really expect out of a 2.1 L, 155 hp engine? And not in a small car either- a 3,600 lbs mid-size luxury car. This isn’t the late 1980s. This is 2001-2007. Pretty dismal to me.

I mentioned the video more because it featured the Jag than about buying/selling cars in general, He talks about some little things about these cars that he looks out for and I thought those could be helpful.
I’m curious as to what your experience with these cars will be, because I definately want to own one in the future.
