This blue on tan 2.7T A6 is minty clean. Oh, and it has a 6-speed manual. No SR20 of the interior because I couldn’t get a decent picture that wasn’t just a selfie of me in the reflection of the window.

I am amazed I had to wait until the second comment for someone to make this joke.

Not that it’s in any way unfounded, mind you.

I know the reflection in the window problem. My parent’s neighbour managed to spec a MK 7 Golf without a fucking radio!! When I first posted about it a while ago even Raph wanted to see SR20, but short of straight up asking him “Can you give me the keys, so I can mock you on the internet?” there’s no way of getting a picture in which you can actually see the blanks.

Look very closely in the bottom left of the windshield and you’ll see the reflection of it sitting on the dash.

I’ve had that moment once or twice when I’ve been taking picture of a car to mock it online, but the owner has come out so I’ve had to pretend I really like it.

I know I claim to promote automatic tolerance, but sometimes I’m really bad at it.

Manual A6s are not common.

Any car can be an all road with a good running start.

Do I spot a hitch receiver? That usage will no doubt increase longevity of a car treasured for reliability.

Yeah but it’s one of the tiny ones for a bike rack or wheelchair holder. We had a similar setup on our old Lexus.

I think they went by: it’s a VW so the electronics are going to go bad at some point, so the less the better.

Automotive tolerance can only go this far...

Well, in his case he brought in unto himself. He works at a VW dealership. He wanted to order his “last car” (before retiring soon-ish and having to drive that much less or whatever) I think it was his first brand new one, he’s usually a cheapskate and knows where to find the gems in the 3 figure trade-ins. He also knew that their “good and experienced” salesman was on vacation, so he went to their new kid. They started at base and added the full spare tire and some folding option for the rear seats.

For a guy who works there and walks around pretending he knows everything about cars that was kinda funny.

When the car arrived, even his boss was a bit ashamed that this did slip by. So he offered to split the cost for retrofitting a radio, which was surprisingly high (€ 1K IIRC), but that’s probably common with these OEM systems.

He declined, saying that he will dump it with VW in a few years and then it will be their problem. Makes no sense! He bought to own long term. They will take turns on him when he tries to trade in this unsellable car.

Don’t think I would ever pick the 2.7 Turbo when there’s the 4.2 V8 that probably has the same mpg numbers, while being about 300 times as reliable. It’s just as fast as well. I am considering buying a pre-facelift C5 A6 with the 4.2 for winter, the styling has really grown on me a lot recently. The only thing thats making the decision harder is the fact that the A8 costs even less, and won’t rust!

Kinja'd!!!1

You can’t get the 4.2 with a manual transmission.

And the reliability thing isn’t necessarily true. They had issues as well.

My car is the same engine and I’ve had no complaints. Well, Apart from the few catastrophically expensive mechanical failures.

Yeah, I would personally go for the auto (while a manual would be a must in a 540i). It seems to be more of a cruiser than anything else. Not aware of any issues particular to the 4.2.

I’ve got the 4.2 with 145k miles on it. It’s had a few expensive issues, but I love it nonetheless.

Cam adjuster solenoid, alternator, some of the electronics, catalytic converter, I don’t remember the other stuff. But it was a $7000 car and we’ve spent at least that much in repairs.

Don’t misunderstand though, when it works it is an absolute gem. I adore it. And it sounds like this:

Ah, none of them are related to the engine ^^ I’ve done all of these on the BMW by now, cam position sensor just went 2 days ago. £99.90 for the part, I’ll replace it myself. Still would never sell it as most of it was predictable and is a general issue with cars of this age. Couldn’t buy anything I like if I’d have a problem with stuff like that. :)

In that case, there’s been no issues with the 4.2 itself. Buy away!
