Kinja'd!!!

it’s been three days since I traded my Subaru for this 87 Cherokee Pioneer. Let’s go through a list of what I’ve found already.

flashers, Cigarette lighter, are all on the same fuse and sometimes will freeze up when I plug in my phone also causing the brake light to stay on. and losing the function of my turn signals. Hazards work fine

Heat blows like the Savanna and air is functional.

Front drivers window can not be rolled all the way down without getting stuck. solution: i don’t roll the window further than 4/5's

My Odometer is stuck on 500 miles and I can’t calculate MPG... Which might be a good thing, but disappointing nonetheless.

idles a bit funky when cold, but i just figured it needs a tuneup.

when I get the chance I’m going to post some detailed pictures. I’m already posting videos on my Podcast’s Facebook page: FSFL. ask me anything you want to know.

Probably need a new speedometer cable. I don’t know if they were electric by 87.

I chased electrical issues on my ‘85 the entire time I owned it. Took it to a shop, they couldn’t figure it out either. Fun times. Good luck!

In other words, do anything with the electrics and hilarity ensues.

Anything before 87 is a nightmare

- Tap yourself a new line for an accessory outlet. Easy enough.

- Heat is NEVER a problem with 4.0 XJs... unless the heater core goes or when the little plastic vacuum connection breaks under the hood leaving you just defrost vents or when the blower motor resistor fries. Both easy fixes.

- Those windows suck, I bet it takes 30 seconds to go up or down as well.

- Speedo cable replacement

- It’s gonna idle funky cold all the time. But a tune up and cleaned out IAC won’t hurt it.

Oh, and leave the trans on “power” all the time. Comfort slips shifts.

Get a Club immediately. A big bright yellow one. My super clean low mile XJ was stolen right out of my driveway and totalled. Turns out they are very easy to steal. (...and after I saw the front end damage that occurred when they thieves ran into a building at pretty low speed, I decided not to replace it.)

Can you point me in the direction of the ‘little plastic vacuum connection’ on the 4.0? My XJ has the defrost only problem and I haven’t been able to track it down yet.

Up until 00-01 (I think) the HVAC is all vacuum controlled. The culprit is usually a plastic connector holding two vacuum lines together, or disintegrated vacuum lines... normally along the firewall in my experience. The ones closer to the motor and intake manifold are for the motor and sensors for the most part.

Basically, look for a vacuum leak or blockage.

Yeah, adamftw is right on with this - check also the vacuum accumulator, which is located behind the front bumper on the passenger side, it can crack with time. The actual switch panel on the dash can be problematic, too. Thankfully, even though it’s vacuum operated, it’s a pretty simple system, and it’s cheap to replace the lines and connectors.
