Finally got to go see Arrival which I wanted to see as soon as it came out but Sunday was the first time I had time free to go see it. It is great. I don’t want to say much more than that here without ruining it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet. I specifically chose the first teaser trailer to give away as little as possible.
If you want to get into the nitty gritty comment below and if you don’t want spoilers turn around now.
Also, I should say I saw three movies this weekend as we rented Kubo and Jungle Book as well. Both my wife and I were disappointed in Jungle Book considering how much praise it got. My wife and kids loved Kubo but strangely I was a little let down by it which is strange because I was the only one who wanted to see it.

Loved this film. Wish hollywood would make more sci-fi like this.

The director will be directing the Blade Runner sequel with Roger Deakins doing the cinematography so I’m definitely looking forward to that.

Yeah, after Sicario I’ve decided to commit to go see anything he directs in theaters.

The Septapods made me think of the Tralfamadorians

I really enjoyed it as well. At times it was a little slow and seemed to drag in parts where they weren’t sure how to portray certain things to the audience but the reveal at the end was certainly worth the wait. *spoiler* My wife didn’t like it so much, complained that a language cannot make you psychic but she was fine with the idea of aliens coming to earth? Had many long discussions about it but she still feels it wasn’t good.

I thought it was okay, to me it felt like the movie ran out of steam halfway through, and I did not think the twist was that good, the build up was much better.
Not to mention that the Chinese general and Renners characters felt somewhat hollow and incomplete, and only seem to be important to the story for a few scenes, despite how important the movie tried to portray them as.
The movie had a lot of potential and, to me at least, felt like it didn’t really deliver.

I enjoyed it but my wife hated it. It was way too slow for her tastes. This from the woman who has been on a Hallmark Christmas movie binge for the last two weeks.

I have heard a lot of people saying it was slow and while I can definitely understand that I felt like it was moving along at a pretty quick pace because I felt like there was stuff for you to process during the lulls.

I very much enjoyed this movie. I didn’t see the twist coming. I thought the pacing was just fine. In fact, I think it was drawn out on purpose. The point of the movie is that the Aliens are crazy patient (since they already know the future), so making the audience feel a little impatient really highlights their patience. Also, it was very refreshing to not have instant communication. Being forced to wait (since that was what the whole movie was about) was good.
The frustrating part for me, was that I went to see it with my family, and my mom and sister not only missed the twist, but actively argued against it. They refused to believe the flash forwards were the future and were adamant that they were flashbacks. Which to me misses the whole point and message of the movie.

For me I felt that the real plot was the story of this mother and wife and how she related to her family and the whole plot with the aliens was a framework for telling hat story.

It’s interesting that you put it that way that they were confused and didn’t realize that they were the future. One could argue that they were flashbacks as her entire life is her past because she’s not a psychic, she just already has her memories before they’ve even happened.

That is true it was a lot to process but when they say “We have to teach them words individually in order to form sentences” and THEN proceed with a montage of doing it I felt intellectually insulted. It was like Dom Toretto telling the crew how the truck jacking is going to go down and then showing us step by step action sequence of what he just explained. Forgivable for F&F but for 90% of the audience that is going to understand Arrival, I don’t think it is necessary to spell out the plan.
