And this is the best it can do?! My dads Clio campus, only 30k on it and somewhat well maintained. His driving style may be some of the problem though. For reference the worst i’ve gotten out of my mechanically identical Twingo is 37mpg in a cold winter and lots of stop start driving.

My Mini is almost that good (trip computer said 32.5 for the last 300 miles) and it is a 1.6 which I Hoon the crap out of.

I think the issue with cars with as little power as these (60hp) they have to be worked hard at all times which causes worse fuel economy than a slightly more potent motor.

I drove a Clio 1.2 across Germany back in 2012 and was amazed at how bad the mileage was for something so small and gutless. I figured when I rented a supermini with a manual that I would at least save on fuel, but that wasn’t the case. I think it did something like 28 MPG US. Granted there was a lot of Autobahn at 120-130 km/h, but I was expecting more like 35-40 MPG.

I struggle to get more than 40mpg out of mine and all my driving is on straight motorways now. the issue is its at 4000 rpm at 80mph.

I really wonder what the efficiency difference between a car making 100hp and the same car with 200hp would be. No real way to test it though because there are so many variables.

Yeah it really depends. Our 150hp heavy diesel gets over 50mpg driving normally. Ive never got close to that in my 60hp renault.

Gearing is part of the problem, but I don’t know if it really has enough power to handle a taller cruising gear. 40 MPG UK is about 33 MPG US. Sadly that’s worse mileage than I’ve gotten in a rental Camry 550 miles from SA to New Orleans at 80 MPH and in an Altima 1000 miles from Phoenix to SA at 80+ MPH. Both of which are big comfy saloon cars.

Wait, what? I average between 33 and 43 (UK mpg) in my Toyota, depending on conditions and throttle application enthusiasm.

These engines are just junk I guess. I love my car but the engine seriously lets it down. It needs to be revved, but doesnt like to rev and gets rubbish mpg.

Yeah my next DD will be bigger and able to cruise much better. Probably a long while before I replace the Twingo though.

It depends hugely on how and where you drive though. Drive long distances at a steady speed as you would if you used motorways to go everywhere and if your speed is reasonably low you can get good figures. I once hired a 3.5 (or thereabouts) Chrysler 300 in America and it did something like 35 mpg (in real money) although it felt slower than my own 2 litre FTO. If I drove the same car back home on my usual shortish journeys I doubt that it would do half of that.

Then again I once borrowed my father’s 1.6 diesel Focus and a long run obeying the speed limit carefully and sticking to sixth gear throughout it did 70 mpg.

Depends where you drive. On short urban or suburban trips the more powerful one will drink fuel, on longer and faster journeys not so much.

I think the cruising speed sweet spot is so low for these cars that its just not possible to get the best out of it. Sure I could get over 50mpg if I cruised at 50mph, but itd add more to my commute than is worth the saving.

Possibly a bit underpowered for your driving style as well? When I’m driving my job’s Megane diesel, it’s foot to the floor at every light, just to move it out of the way, which isn’t good for the average consumption (long-term average of 55 mpg, with 85% highway).

It probably is. I have a long commute so I drive quick to get it out of the way.

No warning lights on my 2009 1.6L Accent hatch ATM! Only one I’ve had was from a dying ignition coil that senses the chip in the key...and even then, that would only come on occasionally, and the car would always start on the second or third try.

6.8L/100km is the car’s EPA estimate mileage...I usually get 6.3-6.5 in the spring summer and fall, and the best I’ve done was 6 with some extreme granny driving. :P

I found out the hard way that our modern obsession with turboing all the things means you ain’t getting anywhere near the target fuel economy if you stay in the boost. I know the Clio II isn’t a n I4t but I feel like it’s a prime example of the trickeration going on with engine mapping and fuel economy.

Theres a definite jump in rate of acceleration once you pass 3500 rpm so some tuning trickery is likely going on.

Come on now, you’re not from the US. Leave the legacy units to them and go metric fully.

Sorry, that’s the common mileage measurement here in Canuckistan! :)

6.5L/100km is about 43mpg in UK terms.

Nope, not bad...I usually drive pretty sedately if I am just out and about to save me some money on gas.
