Severe scoring on the Cam cover.
“It just smoked a bit”my behind. That’s just the cam cover (and upper journal)!
The Head looks meeehdecent.
The Cam rides in aluminum. No bearings. I don’t know how they treated the surfaces yet. But this mill is looking like it suffered infrequent Erl changes.
Well now.. That piston does not look like it’s had 30+ years of abuse. Huh.
Ahh. There it is. Piston skirts shouldn’t be that reflective. That shiny spot is proof of the wear.
Overall? For a 30 year old Air/Erl cooled engine? She’s salvageable! Not one I’m going to use right away though. I have one more Tree Fiddy to tear down on the bike that tried taking my life. And I know how good the gearbox on that one is first hand.

change the oil, who needs to change the oil in a small motor?

No bearings, huh? That sucks. How does one go about salvaging something like that? Does it get re-bored and fitted with actual bearings?

Who you calling small?

It’s actually pretty normal. Most modern ATVs are still like this. It’s an “Enjaner’d to fail” thing.Change the erl after every ride or pay the price.
Most folks sell off on CL or Ebay. I’m not most folks though. I’ll find a way to set bearings in there, weld and regrind the Cam for a modern profile and save it.
Or. I’ll buy a running 450R and make a scary 3 wheeler.

Ouch but indeed salvageable

What does Erl stand for if you don’t mind my ignorance?

Sorry.. I associate with a few old “rednecks”. Thick accents, fast talking and certain libations turns Oil into Erl.
“Yachangethaerl in that thing yet??”

That...may buff out?
I’ve tried to find what I recall was an old thread (on SOHC4.net) regarding cam bearing repair (some singlecams have eaten bearings in the same way), but can’t find it right now.
(edit: found one, but not sure if it’s the one I was thinking of. )
I’ve also heard, as a last-ditch option, putting a roller bearing in by opening up the journal in the head and machining down the cam. But that’s a bit move.

Ok, so I was just way over thinking it.

Oh, and try out rotella if you want a really good oil with low wear characteristics. It has high zinc so it has lots of lubrication. It’s a highly recommended oil for finicky engines, like wrxes and 450rs. Of which I have both.

That “last-ditch” option is where I want to go. I’m hoping against hope I know the right people. The newest of these rolled off the line 30 years ago. It’s history. The modern SXS and Quad wouldn’t exist without these.

Yea, I feel your love for vintage Honda metal, albeit with fewer wheels. I’m always a bit more worried about thin rollers, but the loads and speeds aren’t insane in that application, so you may be okay. But, I haven’t seen the cam and worry that fitting a proper roller may be hard. The bronze shell option is a good one. Good luck with it!

Soichiro Honda didn’t know what he helped start in 1969. Now people are tearing ass in things that look a lot like the original Pilot, Odyssey and those 4 wheeled abominations.. I want to find a way to preserve history. How many heads have been thrown away? How many bikes are rotting in barns?
I haven’t looked it up yet. I bet there’s a split case bearing that can be made to fit.

We use rotella in our yard trucks. What you said must be true because the damn things won’t die.

ehh, yes and no. rotella is/was REALLY good for bike engines because they didn’t have certain friction modifiers. I’ve heard rumors that they changed the formula recently and added certain chemicals that DESTROYS bike clutches.
