How far is too far for a car dealer?

So far, my Jetta has spent over a week in the shop. On three different occasions. I bought it new 8 months ago and I currently have under 10,000 miles on it. The nearest dealer to my house in Virginia is literally 10 minutes away, but bringing it there and then getting to where I need to go is a hassle in its own. Honestly, I’m just not confident the Jetta is going to be reliable enough to not cost me numerous headaches. I’m not going to try to defend the reliability of it, this car isn’t reliable. Simple as that.

In a bit less than a year I’m moving to rural West Virginia. The nearest Volkswagen dealer is about an hour from where I’m moving to and it’s a tiny dealer that’s also an Audi dealer. So I’m guessing the parts availability is going to be pretty bad in the event something goes wrong.

So what should I do? I’ve been itching to get rid of the Jetta since like a month after I bought it, so I have no problem getting rid of it.

I just need the extra push telling me to get rid of it before I move.

Also, I just looked through my posts. I’ve literally been trying to get rid of this car and buy a truck after owning it for about a month. ¯\_()_/¯

jesus man, you’ve been talking about getting rid of it since you got it. just do it already.

get a truck to help with the move and call it a day.

I know, I just need to do it already. I was quite a bit happier with my $2,500 1997 A4.

The depreciation isn’t horrible I guess. I’d lose about one 1997 Audi A4 worth of depreciation.

Start listening to Lehtos podcast.

And you’ll be in WV. Buy a truck and a miata.

Ditch it now, and avoid the price cut it’ll get when the warranty is up.

If it’s under warranty, have them pick it up and drop off a loaner.

Then....

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

...end the headache with Germany. I would if I could.

I’m use to driving 30min-1hr for a dealer, I live in the middle scum fuck nowhere. If it is a hard to find hero car I would drive very long distance, for avg economy car I would not.

No, I strongly dislike Miatas.

I’m getting a truck though.

I’m not over German cars, just this particular one.

They also don’t give loaners. My current dealer doesn’t and neither does the one that I’d be bringing the car to after I move.

The Jetta is the only car I’ve ever had to bring to a dealer because it’s under warranty.

Before the Jetta, my car ownership was limited to old Audis that I did all the work on myself.

Oh, and they never broke profusely.

I’d ditch it, but I hate any of VW’s duller cars unless they’re at least a wagon.

I drive half an hour to take my car to any Fiat dealer here, but they oddly seem to be cheaper than any indie shop I’ve tried lately. Also I’ve never had to leave it at the dealer, so there’s that.

Are you still looking at diesel trucks or are you set for the tacoma?

It’s turbocharged, manual and has the same suspension as the GLI. It’s fun in theory.

“In theory.”

I rented a turbo Jetta once. Put 7 miles on it. I’d rather drive a Mirage.

Ever so often I take a peek at diesel trucks. If I got one, I just wouldn’t be using it to its full potential. So I don’t really see the point in me getting one.

Either a manual Tacoma, or a V8 4Runner are my best choices right now.

It was recently enough that I remember driving it and I’ve rented 7 cars in the last 2.5 weeks! It was just dull. The Mirage sucks, don’t get me wrong, but it was at least hilariously awful.

It might have been the 1.4t.

Either way, the 1.8t isn’t much better. The steering has way too much play in it for a new car.

Nope, a new thing each time.

Oh and hill start assist never works properly, either holding the car for too long, engaging on flat ground or requiring me to rev up to 1,500 Rpms to move the car when it’s engaged. The dealer claims it’s working properly.

Yeah no point in the diesel if you’re not towing constantly or driving to cabela’s parking lot. The retail on tacomas is ridiculous though, have you thought about a domestic (trying to hold in my rant about the f-150) .

I have in the past, but the Tacoma is pretty much perfect for my needs. I don’t necessarily need a Silverado 1500. But I do want a bed, 4x4 and a manual transmission. The Tacoma checks all those boxes and there is a dealer about five minutes away from where I’m moving to.

The distance thing I can relate with. The closest BMW dealers are an hour and a half (Jackson) and two hours (Mobile and New Orleans) away. Thankfully we have a shop here in town that works on them.

Hell, even I’m looking to get rid of the Passat soon (or give it back to my parents) and get a BMW or a Mini. Although I’m sure they aren’t the most reliable cars on the planet, it’ll be a billion times better than this thing. Exactly 1 year and 26k miles after we picked it up new from the dealership, it’s having problems left and right. Every time I drive it, something new shows up. Today, the car decided that it didn’t want to idle at anything over 600 rpm. It also decided to shake rather violently with the air conditioning on. Our last Passat, a 2014 Wolfsburg Edition, was returned under the Lemon Law. This one isn’t proving to be much better with similar mileage. If it helps, just remember I’m going through the same problem right now.

Get A Taco, Tundra, 4Runner, Sequoia, or Land Cruiser. All very reliable body on frame trucks that have good parts availability.

Do not get a diesel truck. Yes they last many many miles, but not with out a heap of issues along the way.

When I had the C30, I had no problem driving an hour and a half to get to the big volvo dealer that had more techs and more loaner cars.

That being said, if you hate the car do much, you really should move on if you aren’t too under.

If it’s been in the shop for that long over the course of a year, you should look at a lemon law claim.

Talk to a VA lemon law lawyer. Of course, if you lived in Michigan, you could just talk to Steve.
